LEONIA, N.J. – The Lehigh women's rowing squad opened its season with the first competitive race of the year on the Overneck Creek in the Saint Joseph's University Invitational on Saturday.

"We came to this race to be elevated by the high-level competition," commented the Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach Peter Costas. "Our boats handled the headwind and the pressure well enough to have some bright moments."

The Mountain Hawks were originally scheduled for a race at Lake Nockamixon against Colgate and Villanova on March 25 but was changed to a scrimmage due to the weather. Last weekend, a race set for Saturday, April 1 hosted by Loyola (Md.) was postponed due to weather but was rescheduled for next Saturday, April 15 against the Greyhounds and Old Dominion.

The 1v finished fourth in a time of 7:26.600 going up against UMass who won the heat. UConn and the host Saint Joseph's finished in front of the Mountain Hawks, as Lehigh was just 0.525 seconds behind UConn.

"The 1-varsity was aggressive and battled nicely, added Costas. "A late charge to close out the first piece is a great moment to build from."

Costas continued, "It was a nice day for the 2v. They spun their wheels into the headwind a bit in their first race, then came out in the second piece with much better length and composure. Sophomore Bella Thompson-Carpenter did a great job at stroke to keep them battling and pushing away in the second half."
