Ayhan Wins the 800m as Lehigh Earns Numerous Top-Three Finishes as Hosts of the Covert Classic and at the Penn Relays

BETHLEHEM Pa. — The Lehigh men's track and field team hosted the Carol and John Covert Classic at the Goodman Track and Field Complex on Friday and Saturday, April 28-29 while also competing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia April 27-29.

The non-team scoring event featured seven other teams that joined the Mountain Hawks at this year's Covert Classic:Â DeSales, Lafayette, Loyola (Md.), Monmouth, Moravian, Muhlenberg and Saint Joseph's.
Mid-Distance/Distance
Seniors Kerem Ayhan and Jacob Martinez were the first two to cross the finish line in the 800m race with Ayhan completing the race first in a time of 1:50.14 and Martinez two seconds behind for second place in 1:52.94. Senior Ethan Davis, first-year Daniel Malatesta and senior Joseph Cranley finished fourth through sixth for five of the top six finishers.

First-year Henry Burd finished fourth in the 1,500m race, crossing the finish line in 4:03.68 while classmates Max Leffler and Thomas Arnold finished ninth and 11th respectively.

Both Tyler French and Aidan Lynch ran in the 5,000m race at the Penn Relays, with French placing 54th in a PR time of 14:37.49 and Lynch finishing 69th with a PR of 14:53.77.

Throws
The Mountain Hawks had three finishes in the top four in the javelin with first-year Wil Jaques throwing a distance of 56.55m to finish second the event.. Sophomores Greg Stagliano and Hunter Rodarmel finished in the third and fourth with Stagliano reaching 56.26m while Rodarmel threw a distance of 54.64m for fourth place.

Sophomore Liam Lovering finished second in the discus with a PR mark of 54.08m, while junior Alex Clevenger placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 15.33m. First-year Joe Nowakowski reached a mark of 14.11m in the shot put

Junior Achilles Mouzakis was the top Lehigh finisher in the hammer with a throw of 52.00m while senior Quinn Conlan and sophomore Ethan McHugh finished 11th and 12th respectively.
Lovering competed at the Penn Relays and reached a distance of 49.50m in the discus, which was good enough for eighth place.
Jumps
Three Mountain Hawks finished in the top 10 in the long jump with sophomore Jordan Layos, first-year Daniel Givens and sophomore Gideon Coprivnicar finishing sixth, seventh and ninth respectively. Layos finished with a distance of 6.21m while Givens reached a distance of 6.09m and Coprivnicar turned in a mark of 5.99m.

Sophomore Mulenga Malama took home a second-place finish with a distance of 13.30m in the triple jump while Layos recorded a mark of 13.00m.

Senior Ian Scott was the highest Mountain Hawk finisher in the high jump, placing third with a mark of 1.97m. Senior Brittann Pierce tied for fifth with a height of 1.87m while junior Eli Aaronson cleared 1.87m for eighth.

First-year Tyson Utesch and sophomore Jack Murphy both competed in the pole vault and Utesch finished fourth at a PR height of 4.25m and Murphy placed seventh after clearing 4.10m.

Scott turned in a second-place finish in the triple jump at the Penn Relays with a distance of 14.60m, just 0.09 meters behind the first-place finisher. Sophomore Skyler Mott finished 10th in the high jump in Philadelphia by clearing 1.97m.
Sprints
In the 110m hurdles, junior Daniel Stipanov took home second place with a time of 15.10 seconds while Coprivnicar recorded a time of 15.92 seconds for sixth place. Senior Vincent Polignano finished in eighth place after turning in a time of 16.39 seconds. in the 400m hurdles, sophomore Jack Murphy placed third with a mark of 56.91 seconds while Polignano was seventh in 59.91 seconds.

All three of Lehigh's 4x400m relay squads finished in the top three spots at the Covert Classic and the Mountain Hawks quartet of Roman, Siani and seniors Jack Bush and Amondo Lemmon finished in 14th with a time of 44.14 seconds. In the 4x400m relay at the Penn Relays, the team of Lemmon, Duffie, seniors Ethan Hood and Patrez Thomas missed qualifying for the finals by less than a second, placing 11th with a time of 3:25.44.

Three Mountain Hawks finished in the top 10 in the 100m dash with senior John Siani taking home third with a time of 11.12 seconds. First-year Niko Cruz crossed the finish in 11.20 seconds and senior Andrew Roman finished ninth with a time of 11.51 seconds.

Siani then placed third in the 200m dash in 22.58 seconds while senior Cole Lavalle finished ninth with a time of 23.26 and Cruz in 23.35 seconds for 11th.
The Mountain Hawks' will prepare to host the 2023 Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday and Saturday, May 5-6 at the Goodman Track and Field Complex. The meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
