
Lehigh Sweeps Weekly Softball Awards, Readies For Wednesday Clash With Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a weekend sweep at Colgate in Patriot League action, the Lehigh softball team swept the Patriot League's weekly awards, announced Tuesday afternoon. Graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich was named Player of the Week while first-year Chloe Hess garnered Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors.

Barjaktarovich had at least two hits and a run scored in all three games, highlighted by a 4-for-4 effort in Sunday's series final, the third four-hit game of Barjaktarovich's career. She batted .533 for the week with four runs scored and added a stolen base. Barjaktarovich scored the second of three runs in the top of the 10th inning in Saturday's series opener, as Lehigh erased an early 5-0 deficit to win 10-7 in 10 innings. On Sunday, Barjaktarovich singled and scored in her first two at-bats as Lehigh built a 3-0 lead on the way to a 4-2 victory.

For the season, Barjaktarovich leads Lehigh with 58 hits and 17 stolen bases and ranks second on the team with a .384 batting average and 30 runs scored.

Hess is recognized for the first time in her career after allowing just two runs over 17.1 innings of work, while earning victories in the circle in all three games at Colgate. She came on in relief in game one to get the final out of the seventh inning and keep the game tied at 7-7, and then retired all nine batters she faced in extra innings, as Lehigh scored three runs in the 10th to win. Hess followed up that performance with a complete-game five-hit shutout in Saturday's second game. A two-run home run in the sixth inning on Sunday was the only damage allowed by Hess on the weekend. Over 17.1 innings, Hess allowed 11 hits and five walks with eight strikeouts. The shutout in Saturday's second game was the first of her collegiate career.

The strong weekend performance improved Hess' record to 12-4 and she now leads the Mountain Hawks with a 1.82 ERA. Hess has struck out 87 batters in 111.1 innings of work.

The weekend sweep improved Lehigh's record to 31-9. With other results around the league, the Mountain Hawks have officially clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament with three league weekends remaining.

Lehigh will open a four-game homestand with a single game against Villanova on Wednesday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. from Leadership Park with streaming on ESPN+.

In addition to Barjaktarovich's strong week a number of Mountain Hawks contributed offensively to the sweep. Sophomore Lindsey Martin went 5-for-8 with three runs scored, while junior Brooke Cannon batted .545 (6-for-11) with two RBIs. First-year Lily Owens drove in seven runs for the Mountain Hawks.

Villanova is 25-18 on the season. The Wildcats are coming off a three-game sweep of St. John's over the weekend in Big East action. Tess Cites is Villanova's leading hitter with a .364 average and 32 RBIs. Kat Gallant leads the pitching staff with an 11-4 record, 2.33 ERA and 73 strikeouts.

The Wildcats lead the all-time series 29-22-2 and won the most recent meeting 5-2 in 2019.

Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh will host Army West Point in Patriot League action this weekend.
