Mountain Hawks Drop Midweek Game To Visiting Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team fell to Villanova 12-1 in six innings in non-league action Wednesday at Leadership Park. The visiting Wildcats had 11 hits and capitalized on six Lehigh walks as well as a pair of errors.

Senior Emily Cimino drove in Lehigh's lone run with a first-inning RBI single as the Mountain Hawks fall to 31-10 on the season.

Chloe Smith led Villanova (26-18), going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and three runs scored. The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead before the Mountain Hawks came to bat.

Cimino put Lehigh on the board in the bottom of the first when she singled to left center off the glove of Wildcat shortstop Brooklyn Ostrowski to plate graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich.

Ally Jones homered on the first pitch of the third inning to extend Villanova's lead to 4-1 and Smith hit a two-run home run in the fifth to put the Wildcats up 6-1.

Villanova added an unearned run in the fifth and put up five runs in the sixth to go up 12-1.

Lehigh managed four singles against Kelsey White and Caroline Pellicano, with sophomore Maddy Schmeiser and first-year Lily Owens joining Cimino and Barjaktarovich in picking up hits.

White also went 2-for-2 with three RBIs at the plate for Villanova.

Junior Katelyn Young started in the circle and took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks in 3.1 innings. Sophomore Maria Urban and junior Ansley Dambach allowed six more runs in relief, only three of which were earned. First-year Chloe Hess recorded Lehigh's only strikeout of the day.

The schedule for Lehigh's Patriot League series against Army West Point has changed due to the threat of inclement weather Saturday night into Sunday. The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will now play a single game Friday beginning at 3:30 from Leadership Park. Saturday's doubleheader remains scheduled for noon. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
