Young's Gem, Seven-Run Eighth Inning Lift Lehigh To Two More Wins In North Carolina

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Lehigh softball team ran its winning streak to five straight with two more wins Saturday on day two of the Camel Invitational. Junior Katelyn Young threw a two-hitter as Lehigh opened its day with a 3-0 win over Canisius. The Mountain Hawks then let a 4-0 lead against North Carolina Central get away, but rallied to score seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to claim an 11-4, eight-inning win.

With five straight victories, the Mountain Hawks are now 9-2 on the season.

Young hurled her first shutout of the season, striking out 11 – one off of her career high – and walking just one. She allowed a walk and a single in the first inning and then a bunt single as she improves to 4-0 on the season.

Senior Emily Cimino continued her hot start at the plate with two more hits and two more RBIs. Her first-inning single plated graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, junior Amanda Greaney brought Cimino home with a sacrifice fly to put Lehigh up 2-0. Cimino singled home first-year Lily Owens in the fourth to cap the scoring for the Mountain Hawks.

Barjaktarovich went 3-for-4, while Cimino, junior Brooke Cannon and senior Josie Charles all had two hits.

Against North Carolina Central, Lehigh plated single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings to build a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth.

Cannon brought Barjaktarovich home with an infield single in the first inning. First-year Crysta Duenas added an RBI sacrifice squeeze bunt in the second to put Lehigh up 2-0. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Rory Dudley in the fifth and a first-year Sydney Parlett RBI single in the sixth accounted staked the Mountain Hawks to a four-run lead.

NC Central (1-16) scored a single run in the sixth and tied the game with three runs in the seventh on a Jaidyn Hamby single and an Ashanti Eubanks sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Lehigh loaded the bases with one out before four consecutive batters brought runs home. Barjaktarovich and Cimino drew bases-loaded walks, sandwiched around an Owens single put Lehigh up 7-4. Dudley and first-year Chloe Hess, batting as Lehigh's flex player both followed with two-run singles to put Lehigh up 11-4.

Lehigh finished with 10 hits, with Parlett leading the way by going 3-for-4.

First-year Sydney Parlett had two of Lehigh's five hits. Charles registered her second two-hit game of the day.

Hess earned the victory in the circle with six innings of relief. She allowed one unearned run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. Sophomore Maria Urban started the game in the circle for Lehigh, while junior Ansley Dambach threw 1.1 innings in her first pitching action of the season.

The Mountain Hawks will close out the Camel Invitational on Sunday when they face Canisius at 9 a.m.
