SAVANNAH, Ga. - Lehigh women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season with a 85-73 defeat against Bowling Green.Â
'The competition at the Savannah Invitational was fantastic," said head coach Addie Micir. "We have to give a lot of props to Bowling Green. They're a really good team, and they are tough. They want to compete, and they want to defend. They put the ball on their hip - their bigs really brought it today. For us, what we said in the locker room was that we lacked a little sharpness and the little details in what we want to do."
The Mountain Hawks started the season winning five straight games, which marked the best start to a season since 2019-20. Lehigh is now 5-1, while Bowling Green is 4-1.Â
The Mountain Hawks had five players finish in double figures. Colleen McQuillen led the way with 19 points. Lily Fandre tallied 13 points, Meghan O'Brien and Ella Stemmer both finished with 12 points, and Jamie Behar had 10 of her own points.
"That's what we want to do," Micr said. "We want to share it and shoot it. We don't care who scores it. Now, we just have to figure out a way to put it together. We have people who can score, but now we have to figure out who can defend in those big moments."
Despite the 9 a.m. start, both teams started out hot. Lehigh held a 29-24 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Mountain Hawks had their best shooting performance in the first quarter. They shot 66.7% from the field and made five three-pointers.Â
"I thought we came out great in the first quarter," Micir said. "We were just running and playing at our pace, but they changed their defense a little bit, and it took us too long to adjust to it, so we're going to learn from it and figure it out."
The Falcons shot 66.8% from the field and connected on two-three pointers.
Bowling Green took control of the pace in the second quarter and slowed Lehigh down after the Mountain Hawks led by as many as six. The Falcons outscored the Mountain Hawks 21-12.
Bowling Green led 45-41 at halftime. It marked the first time all season that the Mountain Hawks trailed at the half.Â
Lehigh started the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 49-45 lead, and the Falcons called timeout.
Meghan O'Brien connected on a three-pointer with 6:59 remaining in the third quarter to put Lehigh up 50-49. That would be the last lead of the day for the Mountain Hawks. Prior to that, there were 11 lead changes.Â
The Falcons would continue to push the lead. Bowling Green led 63-55 at the end of the third quarter.Â
O'Brien scored a layup with 7:20 to go to cut the deficit to two, but Bowling Green would go on to outscore the Mountain Hawks 19-10.Â
Lexi Fleming scored a game-high of 22 points to lead the way for the Falcons.Â
Bowling Green was 31-of-59 from the field (52.5%), and Lehigh was 26-of-58 (35.5%). The Falcons held a 37-26 advantage on the boards.Â
The Mountain Hawks return home to Stabler Arena on Tuesday when they face Drexel at 6 p.m.Â
