
Lehigh Defeats Delaware 78-77, Secures Third Straight Win

NEWARK, Del. - The Lehigh women's basketball team pulled out a 78-77 victory against Delaware Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Mountain Hawks improved to 3-0, while the Blue Hens fell to 1-1.
"Winning on the road is very hard, and we built a lead, but what we said at halftime was we knew Delaware would come out and throw a punch, and they did," said head coach Addie Micir. "We weathered the storm. I thought we fouled too much in the third quarter, which put them on the line and it hurt us and slowed the game down, but I'm very proud of this team. We got back to playing Lehigh basketball."
While the Mountain Hawks came out with the win, Delaware had a chance to score the game-winning basket. Delaware had possession with 14.8 seconds left in regulation. Chloe Wilson took a shot with one second on the clock and missed it. Ella Stemmer recovered the rebound to secure the win for the Mountain Hawks .
Stemmer also led the way in scoring for Lehigh. The junior recorded a career-high of 26 points. Stemmer was 9-for-22 from the field and 4-for-10 from beyond the arc. Stemmer also corralled four rebounds and three steals. Two other Mountain Hawks finished in double figures. Jamie Behar scored 12 points, and Whitney Lind scored 11 points.
"We expect Ella to be a 40% three-point shooter, and that's what she was tonight," Micir said. "That kid is an elite shooter. The first two games were a little bit of a struggle for her, but we told her it's coming. She is a two-way player."
The first quarter would be back and forth. There were 11 lead changes, and after Stemmer put Lehigh up by one with 15 seconds left in the first quarter, the Mountain Hawks would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
Lehigh still led by one after the first 10 minutes despite turning the ball over nine times.
Lehigh continued to pick up the pace in the second quarter and outscored the Blue Hens 27-16. The Mountain Hawks had their best shooting performance in the second quarter, going 10-for-21 from the field (47.6%).
Gracyn Lovette knocked down a three-pointer with 40 seconds left in the Mountain Hawks to put them up by 12, which would be the biggest lead of the game for Lehigh. That three-pointer also marked the first career basket for Lovette.
Lehigh led 45-33 at halftime.
Delaware came out in the third quarter and put pressure on the Mountain Hawks. The Blue Hens outscored the Mountain Hawks 30-19 and ended up tying the game with 53 seconds to go. Remi Sisselman responded with two free throws to give Lehigh the lead.
Lehigh held a 64-63 lead at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was as back and forth as it could be, with both teams putting up 14 points.
Stemmer knocked down a two-pointer with 2:43 minutes left to put Lehigh up 78-72. That would be the last time the Mountain Hawks would score. Lehigh's defense was relentless in the final 2:43. holding the Blue Hens to five points.
Seventeen of Lehigh's 25 made shots were assisted. Meghan O'Brien dished out a team-high of six assists. Colleen McQuillen had four assists and eight points.
Klarke Sconiers scored a game-high 33 points for Delaware. Sconiers was 11-from-17 from the field and grabbed 11 of her 33 points off of free throws.
The Blue Hens held a 53-42 advantage on the boards.
Tuesday's game marked the first time Lehigh defeated Delaware since 1990. The Blue Hens had won the previous nine meetings.
Lehigh returns home to Stabler Arena on Friday to host Yale at 6 p.m.
