Mountain Hawks To Compete At Journeymen Collegiate Classic at Nearby Freedom HS

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The second weekend of the wrestling regular season has the Mountain Hawks set for another tournament, closer to home. Lehigh will stay in Bethlehem for the round robin Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Sunday at nearby Freedom High School.

As many as 21 Lehigh wrestlers could compete on Sunday. The Journeymen Collegiate Classic will once again feature a tournament-style round-robin format. Wrestlers will compete in 6-8 man round robin brackets that will be followed by crossover matches. Action begins at 9 a.m. with streaming video available on FloWrestling.

Lehigh opened its 2023-24 season last weekend with a 35-wrestler contingent at the Princeton Open in New Jersey. The Mountain Hawks had 15 top-six place winners, highlighted by seven individual champions: first-year Luke Stanich (125), first-year Ryan Crookham (133), junior Malyke Hines (141), junior Max Brignola (157), junior Jake Logan (165), junior Michael Beard (197) and sophomore Nathan Taylor (285). Brignola competed unattached last week.

Lehigh has been a regular participant at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic with wrestlers competing for many years when the event was in Troy, N.Y. and then in 2021 at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa. Last year, Lehigh only sent five wrestlers to the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Frinzi, Herceg and Lawrence all competed last year with Frinzi winning his pool at 165C.

Participating teams include Arizona State, Army, Bloomsburg, Buffalo, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Hofstra, Lehigh, LIU, Lock Haven, NC State, Penn, Penn State, Pitt-Johnstown, Purdue and Sacred Heart.

Following the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, the 20th-ranked Mountain Hawks will open the dual season against No. 16 Pittsburgh, Sunday Nov. 19 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
