Lehigh Eliminated From PLT By BU On Penalty Kicks

BOSTON, Mass. - A 2-2 tie through 110 minutes of play sent Lehigh and Boston University to penalty kicks. The Terriers advanced to the Patriot League semifinals winning 2-1 on penalties, Sunday afternoon.

First-year Aminah Baruwa scored the first goal of the game and the Terriers allowed an owl goal for Lehigh's second.

In the 11th minute, Boston University took a 1-0 lead as Kayla Ross finished a corner kick on the far post from Giulianna Gianino's delivery.

Boston University's lead held until the 31st minute, when Baruwa evened the score off an assist from junior Hope Flanegin. The score remained tied 1-1 through intermission.

On a Lehigh corner kick in the 58th minute, a couple of mis-hits for the Terriers put the ball off the bottom of the crossbar, just pushing it over the goal line to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead on the own goal.

In the 78th minute, graduate student Ryelle Shuey committed a foul in the box and Boston University was awarded a penalty kick. Gianino capitalized to even the score 2-2 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

At the end of regulation, the teams headed into overtime tied 2-2. Three minutes into overtime, sophomore Sophia Lis nearly scored the game-winner but the ball hit off the post. This was the best look for either team in both overtimes as the game headed into penalty kicks.

Senior Emma Roesing went second for the Mountain Hawks and scored her penalty kick. Goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou saved two penalty kicks, including the Terriers' third which kept the Mountain Hawks alive. Margy Porta scored on the fourth penalty kick for Boston University, and goalkeeper Celia Braun made the stop on Ava Schaller's shot to send the Terriers to the semifinals.

Ousouljoglou made nine saves in the game and Braun picked up four. Boston University held a slim 22-17 advantage in shots on the game.

Lehigh concludes the 2023 season with a 7-5-5 record.
