Lehigh Falls 17-7 To Georgetown On Wet Saturday At Goodman Stadium
10/14/2023 4:40:00 PM | Football
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a wet Saturday afternoon at Goodman Stadium, Lehigh dropped a Patriot League contest to Georgetown 17-7 on Tackle Cancer Day presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Â
Trailing 7-0 at halftime, the Mountain Hawks tied the game at 7-7 following a 13-yard pass from sophomore Brayten Silbor to senior Eric Johnson early in the third quarter, but Georgetown took the lead for good on a 33-yard Patrick Ryan field goal with 3:42 left in the third.
Â
Lehigh was unable to answer with any points, while Georgetown tacked on a second touchdown late after converting a 4th-and-long. The Mountain Hawks are now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League, while Georgetown is 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Â
The Hoyas took a 7-0 lead with 5:45 to play in the opening quarter on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Knoop to Jimmy Kibble.
Â
Lehigh's first two possessions both featured a big play in the passing game but the Mountain Hawks were unable to score.
Â
Neither team was able to score in the second quarter, with both sides missing a field goal in the tough weather conditions. Senior Mike DeNucci and first-year William Parton stuffed Knoop for a loss on 4th-and-1 early in the period as well. When Ryan missed from 33-yards out, Lehigh went into the locker room trailing just 7-0.
Â
Lehigh opened the third quarter with the football and marched 75 yards in 10 plays to tie the game. A 20-yard completion to first-year Mason Humphrey and an 11-yard run by first-year Luke Yoder helped set up the 13-yard touchdown pass as Silbor found Johnson in the near corner of the end zone.
Trailing 10-7 on its first possession of the fourth quarter, Lehigh moved the ball to midfield but a holding penalty and incomplete pass led to a Lehigh punt.
Â
Georgetown took advantage and drove 76 yards in 11 plays. On 4th-and-9 from the Lehigh 30, Knoop hit Brock Biestek for 26 yards down to the Lehigh 4. Two plays later Joshua Stakely rushed for a four-yard touchdown to extend the Hoyas' lead to 17-7.
Â
"New week, same result," Lehigh head coach Kevin Cahill said. "It's getting frustrating the way we find ways to end up on the lower side of the scoreboard. I don't think we played particularly well overall. Too many penalties, especially offensively. Defensively, we have to challenge and be more competitive in some situations. It's not a good feel at all."
Â
Total yards favored Georgetown 457-337 and the Hoyas had 25 first downs to Lehigh's 19.
Â
Silbor finished 11-of-34 for 205 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted twice. Humphrey was the top target with three catches for 70 yards. Yoder rushed 15 times for 81 yards, while senior Jack DiPietro gained 44 yards.
Â
"We have to score more points," Cahill said. "We stalled out twice in the first half when we were driving down and we hurt ourselves. Penalties that hurt ourselves. We missed a field goal – it was a probably a bit of a risk to take – but it was too far to go for it. We would have preferred some sort of yardage on the third down play.
Â
"We have to finish drives," Cahill continued. "The word finish comes up multiple times per game for us. We're just not there right now."
Â
Sophomore Nick Peltekian led the defense with a career-high 13 tackles and three tackles for loss.

For Georgetown, Knoop completed 26-of-32 for 332 yards and a touchdown. Nicholas Dunneman caught 10 passes for 109 yards, while Stakely and Naieem Kearney combined to rush 31 times for 102 yards. Â
Â
"We have to have more attention to detail in what we're doing," Cahill said. "Every play matters. I don't think we understand that thinking yet – that every play matters. You don't know what play is going to impact a game. Clearly too many plays impacted the game. You have to be tuned in for those."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are back on the road next Saturday to face Bucknell with game time set for 1 p.m. from Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM beginning at noon.
