BOSTON, Mass. - Playing its second straight undefeated Patriot League team in four days, the Lehigh women's basketball team just couldn't quite get it done again, falling to Boston University 82-69 at Case Gym Saturday night.
Lehigh is 10-11 overall and 6-4 in league play, while the Terriers sit in first place in the Patriot League, going 9-0 in league play and holding a 15-6 record overall.
The Terriers had the advantage on the glass on Saturday, coming up with 45 rebounds. 17 of those were offensive. The Mountain Hawks finished with 24 rebounds.
"We knew they were a team who was going to come out and crash," said head coach Addie Micir. "They did a really good job of that. We've got to figure out a way to get on the boards better and how to grab it with two hands."
Lehigh trailed by just 16-15 after the first quarter, but the second quarter would be the difference on Saturday. The Terriers, who were third in the nation in three-point percentage before today's game, shot 50% from three in the second quarter. Boston University had 21 points to Lehigh's eight. Lehigh was 3-of-16 from the field in the second quarter.
"The thing that got away from us in the second quarter was that we fouled," Micir said."We put them on the free throw line. They were 11-for-11 at the half, and that slowed the game down, and allowed them to get free points. Those are things we are going to have to continue to work on."
The Terriers had more turnovers in the second quarter, but the Mountain Hawks just couldn't get their shots to fall. Half of Meghan O'Brien's 10 points were scored in the second quarter, with Anna Harvey being the only other Lehigh player to score in the second frame.
Boston U. had a 37-23 lead at the half.
The Terriers would take a 20 point lead, their biggest lead of the game, off of a Sydney Johnson layup with 6:47 left in the third quarter, which forced a Lehigh timeout.
The Mountain Hawks went on a 6-0 run after that to cut the Terriers lead to 14, but they just couldn't get enough stops or baskets to take back the lead.
First-year Katie Hurt notched a three-pointer with four seconds left in the game to record her first collegiate ponts.
Johnson had a game-high of 22 points. Caitlin Weimar, who went down with an injury in the second quarter, scored 12 points, grabbing nine rebounds all in the first 20 minutes.
Three Mountain Hawks scored in double-figures. Mackenzie Kramer had a team-high of 19 points, Frannie Hottinger scored 14 and O'Brien followed that with 10.
Both teams had 17 turnovers. Lehigh ended the game going 25-of-58 (43.1%) from the field, while Boston University was 29-of-61 (47.5%).
Lehigh will have a little bit of a break before hosting Lafayette on Feb. 4, which is also the National Girls and Women in Sports Day game. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
"We gotta keep getting better each day, " Micir said. "We will watch film. Obviously, we have some things we'll continue to work on during the bye week and to grow on. It's a big weekend not just because we are playing Lafyette, but because we're celebrating women in sports, so there's a lot to play for."
