LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - On Thursday afternoon, the Mountain Hawks offensively put the pieces together as first-year Sophia Lis and sophomore Corinne Lyght both found the back of the net to secure Lehigh's 2-1 victory over Siena.
"I think we've been staying the course in terms of our tactics so we had to adjust to play on the turf," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "We had one training practice on the turf before the game so I think the first thing is acclimating to the surface but I think we were able to execute. In the beginning, we were kind of trying to find our footing and I think in the second half, we knew where we could be successful after completing the first.
"I'm super happy with the personnel," Calabrese continued. "I think everybody, from the people who started the game to the gamechangers who came on the field, worked really hard and were very purposeful in terms of execution in the final third. We just have to find the back of the net a little bit more but that's going to come for sure."
The first half of the game saw a strong defensive effort from both Lehigh and Siena. Senior Julianna Bonner opened up the game with a shot in the second minute. Junior Alex Odle and sophomore Corinne Lyght followed suit, putting up shots of their own just minutes later. Siena goalkeeper Brooke Boermeester showed no signs of letting the ball get past her.
Senior Chloe Sherman entered the game for Lehigh where she immediately added two more shots for the Mountain Hawks but could not find the back of the net.
Going into the second half, Lehigh outshot Siena 9-1. The Mountain Hawks entered the second half with the same offensive intensity that they began the game with.
In the 62nd minute, senior Mattie Murphy sent a cross in from just outside the 18-yard box. Lis, who found herself right outside the 6-yard box, booted Murphy's cross into the net to secure her first collegiate goal.
"That should definitely give Sophia some confidence," Calabrese said. "She has the ability and she's gotten a lot of looks on goal so to put one away as a forward it can essentially allow you to take a deep breath and say 'Okay. I have that,' and that should build her confidence for sure."
Just one minute later, Siena tied the game 1-1 with a quick goal from Core Keohane. The Saints tried to extend their lead in the 82nd minute with a free kick just outside the 18 but the Lehigh defense prevailed, keeping the score tied at one.
The Mountain Hawks showed no signs of backing down as they increased the offensive pressure. Lehigh took four corner kicks over the span of ten minutes but Siena's second goalkeeper, Angela Fini, put up a wall of defense in the net.
In the 84th minute, Lyght launched the game-winning shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The ball soared up in the air as Fini dove to get a hand on it, ultimately putting the ball in the back of the net for the Mountain Hawks.
"We know Corinne has that in her and I think she's been really persistent in her efforts," said Calabrese. "I think being in her second year, people are scouting her so she's going to have to be pretty creative and thoughtful in terms of how she's looking to create chances and it was a great goal, coming in and serving it on her left foot."
With seconds remaining on the clock, the Saints tried one last time to even the score at two but the ball went wide, securing Lehigh's first victory of the season.
The Mountain Hawks outshot the Saints 20-2 on Thursday afternoon. First-year goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou had one save for Lehigh while goalkeepers Brooke Boermeester and Angela Fini tallied five saves for Siena.
"St. John's is a really formidable opponent, so that's going to be a battle," said Calabrese. "Last week was the first Thursday-Sunday game that we went through so I think this time, it's a 1 p.m. game so it's another opportunity for us to learn more about ourselves and to continue to get better."
Lehigh will return to Bethlehem on Sunday for an afternoon game against St. John's. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks (1-3-1) will open up league play against Army on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at West Point, N.Y.
