Rivalry Showdown At Lafayette Highlights Friday-Monday Slate For Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of their last three games, the Mountain Hawks resume Patriot League play Friday night with a visit to Lafayette for the annual rivalry clash. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from Lafayette's Rappolt Field with broadcast coverage on ESPN+.

Lehigh's three-game winning streak has come against three NEC opponents, which has helped the Mountain Hawks even their season mark at 5-5. Last weekend, Lehigh defeated Merrimack 3-1 on Saturday before downing LIU 1-0 Sunday in overtime, behind a game-winning goal by senior Sarah Bonthuis.

Just two and a half minutes into overtime, Bonthuis made a brilliant diving play on a pass from junior Julia Gatelein to direct the ball into the cage to give Lehigh the victory. Senior Sydney White, junior Lotte Smorenburg and first-year Zoe Day tallied Lehigh's goals in the win over Merrimack, a game in which the Mountain Hawks held a commanding 24-5 shot advantage.

Bonthuis leads the Patriot League in scoring with 19 points behind seven goals and five assists. Her seven goals rank second in the league. Junior Abbie Brown has four goals to rank second on the Mountain Hawks, while first-year Maddie Kandra has added three.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn has played all 613-plus minutes in the goal cage for Lehigh, with 58 saves and a .690 save percentage.

Lehigh is 0-1 in Patriot League play following a 4-1 loss at Boston University on Sept. 17.

Lafayette is still looking for its first league win after dropping 2-1 decisions to American and Bucknell. The Leopards are 3-7 overall and are coming off a 3-2 overtime win over No. 7 Princeton.

Molly McAndrew and Felicitas Hannes lead Lafayette with three goals, while McAndrew has a team-best eight points. Hannes and McAndrew teamed up on the overtime game-winner at Princeton. Raffi Fragomeni and Emma Garvey have split time in goal for the Leopards.

Lafayette leads the all-time series 41-15-3, but Lehigh has claimed the last two meetings. Gatelein scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win in Easton in March 2021, while Lenke Havas converted a penalty stroke in overtime last year to give Lehigh a 3-2 victory. White also scored for the Mountain Hawks in that game.

Following the Rivalry game, Lehigh will host Villanova in a rare Monday night contest with game time set for 6 p.m. at Ulrich Field.

Villanova is 7-2 on the season and will travel to Old Dominion Friday before visiting Lehigh on Monday. Last week, the Wildcats defeated Temple and La Salle by identical 3-2 scores.

The Wildcats hold a 16-10 lead in the all-time series and won last year's season-opener 4-3.

Monday night's game will also be broadcast on ESPN+.

Next weekend, Lehigh will host Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m.
