BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh erased three one-goal deficits in the first half, but ultimately fell 4-3 to Wagner in overtime on a rainy Sunday at Ulrich Field. Wagner's Julia Pastorino scored her second goal of the game 3:49 into overtime to give the Seahawks the victory.
Junior Abbie Brown capped a strong weekend with a goal and an assist, while first-years Maddie Kandra and Kiki Mes also found the back of the cage for the Mountain Hawks, who fall to 2-4 on the season. Wagner is now 3-2.
"We lost control of the game quickly in the first half," Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer said. "Our second half we fell into a better flow and were able to match their pace more effectively."
Pastorino opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the contest when she dribbled in from the left side and slipped a shot underneath goalkeeper Maddie Kahn.
Lehigh answered shortly thereafter as Kandra took a pass from classmate Zoe Day and finished for her second goal of the weekend to tie the game at 1-1 after one quarter of play.
Wagner reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter when Natalie Rocuskie scored off a rebound following a Seahawk corner.
The Mountain Hawks answered eight minutes later as Brown scored her third goal of the weekend, with a shot from the left side of the circle that deflected off the Wagner goalkeeper and into the upper part of the cage.
Kayla Kruk put Wagner up again less than two minutes later, scoring off a rebound in front of the cage, but the Mountain Hawks answered again less than a minute later as Brown's centering pass was tipped in by Mes at the near post for her first college goal.
The six-goal first half was followed by a scoreless second half. In overtime, Pastorino took a pass from Agustina DeHarbe and scored her second of the game to give Wagner the win at the 63:49 mark.
"We know how to own our mistakes but there is work to be done to ensure those mistakes aren't repeated," Dallmeyer said. "The ownership in taking those action steps needs to improve. The work will be done before leaving for Boston."
Lehigh out-shot Wagner 18-12, including a 10-3 advantage in the second half and overtime. Corners also favored the Mountain Hawks by a 7-5 margin. Kahn made five saves for Lehigh while Daisy Ruhle stopped eight for Wagner.
The Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play next Saturday at Boston University, in a game that will be played on Harvard's campus in Cambridge, Mass. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Lehigh will then visit Sacred Heart Sunday at 1 p.m.
