CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - An early goal from senior Sarah Bonthuis was not enough to give Lehigh field hockey its first league win of the season. The Mountain Hawks (2-5) fell to Boston University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in a game played on Harvard's campus.
Lehigh and Boston University put on a defensive clinic during the first quarter, with both teams denying any chance of giving up the first goal of the game. Both teams went scoreless in the first 15 minutes, with senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn earning four saves in the first quarter.
The Mountain Hawks scored the first goal of the game just three minutes into the second quarter. Bonthuis launched a shot past Terriers' goalkeeper Caroline Kelly to earn her fourth goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, Boston University tied the game at 1-1 with a shot from Amalia Preece. With the score tied at one going into the second half, Kahn and the Lehigh defense showed no signs of slowing down.
Kahn made four saves within the first four minutes of the third quarter before Boston University's Payton Anderson scored on a penalty stroke. During the third quarter, Lehigh had chances to tie the game at two but could not put the ball into the back of the goal. Kahn made four more saves in the third quarter to tally eight saves in 15 minutes.
Two minutes into the final quarter of the game, Kahn made her ninth goal to keep the score at 2-1. The Terriers took the 3-1 lead off of a second goal from Anderson. With eight minutes left to play, Boston University scored its fourth goal of the game to secure the 4-1 victory.
Kahn finished the game with a career-high 16 saves on Saturday afternoon. Boston University led Lehigh 25-7 in shots.
Lehigh will travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The Mountain Hawks will return to Bethlehem to host Merrimack on Saturday, Sept. 24 and LIU on Sunday, Sept. 25. Both games will begin at 12 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
