Six-Run First Propels Lehigh to Win Over Saint Peter’s in Non-League Finale

5/4/2022 6:09:00 PM | Baseball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – A six run first inning was all it needed to claim a victory Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field, as the Lehigh baseball team topped Saint Peter's, 6-4 in the non-league finale of the 2022 season. The Mountain Hawks (24-20, 10-11 PL) batted around in the first inning before pitching held the Peacocks (6-35, 3-12 MAAC) to just four runs on eight hits in the contest. Lehigh has now won three in a row and seven of its last nine games heading into the most important weekend of the season.

A quartet of Mountain Hawks recorded a pair of hits with Jake Whitlinger, Casey Rother, Gerard Sweeney and Tyler Young while Sweeney and Chase Carlson each finished with two RBIs.

First-year right-hander Jack Hamilton got the start and threw the first three innings, allowing just one run on four hits. First-year Val Taddei had four strikeouts before turning it over to junior Will Grisack, who earned the win after going 3.2 shutout frames without surrendering a hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Senior Nick Pave struck out two to earn his fifth save of the season.

Lehigh started the scoring in the top of the first inning on Sweeney's two-run single to left field, as the Mountain Hawks jumped in front, 2-0. Young ripped an RBI single to left field to make it 3-0 while another RBI single, this time from Andrew Nole, plated Sweeney to take a 4-0 lead. Carlson's two-run double to right field scored both Nole and Young as Lehigh earned a six-spot in the first frame.

Saint Peter's cracked the run column in the third inning on a sacrifice-fly to center field and then added two more on a two-run shot in the fourth.

Grisack held the Peacocks scoreless for 3.2 innings before Pave came in to shut the door (despite giving up a run on three hits) and earn his team-leading fifth save of the year.

With the win, Lehigh sweeps the season series with the Peacocks and improves to 12-2 all-time against Saint Peter's.

The Mountain Hawks close the regular season with two ultra-important doubleheaders at Army West Point Saturday and at Holy Cross Sunday with a berth to the Patriot League Tournament on the line for the second consecutive year. All four games will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
