BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Behind a terrific performance from the Lehigh baseball team's pitching staff in which the Mountain Hawks (21-19) twirled a two-hitter (including a no-hit bid through seven innings), Lehigh recorded nine straight runs between the fifth and seventh innings to break a scoreless tie in a 9-4 victory over Cairn (25-13) Thursday afternoon at J. David Walker Field.
Â
Six pitchers combined to allow just two hits in the victory and were led by junior Will Grisack's strong relief performance, with three shutout innings with no hits allowed, striking out three and walking none. He earned the win, his first of the 2022 season.
Â
On offense, nearly all of Lehigh's starting lineup cracked the hit column with multi-hit performances from Adam Retzbach, Gerard Sweeney, Tyler Young and Chase Carlson. Young went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the victory.
Â
Tied at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Casey Rother broke a scoreless tie with a two-run triple to right center field, a shot that was 106 miles per hour off the bat, scoring both Joe Gorla and Jake Whitlinger to take a 2-0 lead.
Â
Retzbach followed Rother with an RBI single up the middle, extending the Lehigh lead to 3-0.
Â
In the sixth inning, Cairn scored its first run of the game without recording a base hit with Jared Sucro scoring on a fielder's choice. The Highlanders cut into the Mountain Hawks' lead, 3-1.
Â
Lehigh scored three runs in the sixth inning on Young's RBI single to third base as Riley Davis came around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman. Carlson notched an RBI single to right field, while Gorla reached on a fielder's choice to score Carlson and push the lead to 7-1.
Â
Three more runs in the seventh inning upped the Lehigh lead to 9-1 following Young's second RBI single of the afternoon and Gorla's two-run single to right field.
Â
Cairn inched closer in the top of the eighth inning on Tyler Warr's three-run double to right center field as the Mountain Hawks' lead got trimmed down to 9-4.
Â
First-year Najir Glenn shut the door in the ninth, allowing just one walk with one strikeout in an inning of work as Lehigh prevailed to get the victory.
Â
The victory over Cairn extends Lehigh's win streak against non-Division I opponents to 11 straight.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return home to J. David Walker Field this weekend for the final three home games of the regular season, beginning at noon Saturday against Holy Cross on Senior Day.
