Sisselberger Named Nominee for Tewaaraton Award

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For a second straight season, Lehigh men's lacrosse senior faceoff midfielder Mike Sisselberger has been named a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award, as announced on Thursday. Sisselberger is one of 25 players nationally named a nominee, and one of only two from the Patriot League (along with Army's Brendan Nichtern). He becomes the first two-time Tewaaraton nominee in Lehigh men's lacrosse history.
Â
Other nominees were Dan Taylor in 2015 and David DiMaria, the Mountain Hawks' current director of operations, in 2013. Several others have been named to the Watch List, including graduate student James Spence this year.
Â
The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Â
Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from these groups, to be announced in three weeks at the conclusion of the regular season.Â
Â
A preseason first team All-American by the USILA, USA Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse Media (where he was one of just four unanimous first team All-Americans), Sisselberger finished his junior season with the best faceoff winning percentage for a season in NCAA Division I history – 79.5 percent (225-of-283) – breaking the previous mark of 79.1 percent held by Albany's TD Ierlan in 2018. Sisselberger also finished the season with 160 groundballs, a new program and Patriot League record, especially impressive after a shorter season than usual (12 games played in 2021). Sisselberger collected double-figure groundballs in 11 of those contests while offensively, he added four goals and two assists. He was named the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year and was the only men's lacrosse student-athlete from the league named a first team postseason All-American.
Â
So far in 2022, Sisselberger has won 66.9 percent of his faceoffs (174-of-260) with 106 groundballs. His win percentage and groundballs per game (9.64) are both good for second nationally. Sisselberger began the season winning 14-of-16 at NJIT while opening Patriot League play by winning 18-of-22 vs. Navy. He followed by winning 20-of-26 against Holy Cross and 17-of-25 in a huge win at No. 12 Army West Point. Sisselberger has won Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week three times this season, increasing his already league record to nine for his career. He was named to the USILA National Tea of the Week following his effort against Navy and was among the midseason Inside Lacrosse Media All-Americans.
Â
Sisselberger and the Mountain Hawks will return home on Saturday, Apr. 23 to host Boston University at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
