ROME, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's rowing team enjoyed a successful Saturday at Colgate, led by the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four, who both advanced to the grand final of racing. The Varsity Eight beat Patriot League foe Colgate head-to-head in the morning before finishing ahead of Marist in the afternoon's grand final.
"The Varsity Eight probably had the best day out of all the crews," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "They were consistent in both races in terms of speed and poise. With them beating both Colgate and Marist on the day, they felt good about their performance. When you can walk away feeling excited, that's always a good day of racing."
The Varsity Eight beat Colgate by 12 seconds in the morning, posting a time of 6:50.0. In the grand final, the Mountain Hawks had a time of 6:55.4, exactly 10 seconds ahead of Marist.
Meanwhile, the Varsity Four posted an impressive time of 8:14.30 in the morning heat, 25 seconds ahead of D'Youville (8:39.30) and nearly 29 seconds ahead of Colgate (8:43.2). The Mountain Hawks then came in third in the grand final behind a pair of Marist boats in a tight finish.
The Second Varsity Eight placed second in its heat (7:16.30) before besting Canisius in the petite final (7:47.6).
"I think overall, the women raced really well," said Lehigh head coach We started putting together things we've been practicing on were able to execute them on race day, which was a huge step forward for us this weekend. It was good to see each boat have at least one good race. Hopefully we can start putting things together more consistently over the next few weeks before Patriots."
The Mountain Hawks (women and men) will return to the water next Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia where they'll face La Salle and Fairfield.
