Overtime Win Gives Wood Third All-America Honor, Berth in Semifinals

3/18/2022 3:01:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

DETROIT – Senior Jordan Wood avenged an earlier loss to Iowa's Tony Cassioppi to become a three-time All-American Friday, while junior Josh Humphreys came up short in his quarterfinal bout as the Mountain Hawks completed session three of the NCAA Championships at Little Caesars Arena.

Wood's 3-1, sudden victory decision puts him into Friday night's semifinals and guarantees a top six finish.

Friday afternoon's heavyweight quarterfinal matched the No. 6 seed Wood and No. 3 seed Cassioppi. Wood escaped early in the second period, while Cassioppi did the same early in the third, sending the match to sudden victory.

With a little under a minute left in the sudden victory period, Wood scored on a single leg shot to win 3-1. Wood earns the 159th All-America honor in program history and will now face No. 2 seed Cohlton Schultz of Arizona State in Friday night's semifinals. Schultz edged Wood in the tiebreakers, Feb. 19 in Tempe, Ariz.
Humphreys will have a chance to join Wood on the podium when he wrestles in the All-America round of 12 Friday night. The seventh-seeded Humphreys dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 2 seed Ryan Deakin of Northwestern at 157. Deakin scored takedowns in the first and then late in the second periods, while Humphreys was only able to muster a first period escape and a late stalling point. He will face No. 11 seed Austin O'Connor of North Carolina, the 2021 NCAA Champion at 149, needing a win to secure a place on the podium.

Lehigh finished the session with 11 points, and sits in a tie for 25th place.

The NCAA Championships continue Friday night with session four beginning at 8 p.m. The session will feature the championship semifinals, All-America round of 12 and consolation quarterfinals. It will be televised on ESPN with streaming video of every mat available on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.
