BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's rowing team is eager and ready to kick off its spring season on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks face Saint Joseph's and Delaware on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The day gets underway with the Varsity Four at 10:20 a.m. followed by the Second Varsity Eight at 10:20, Varsity Eight at 10:40 and Third Varsity Eight at 11:00. Lehigh enters the spring with high hopes, as the Mountain Hawks look to continue setting the bar higher and higher for a program that has already made impressive strides every season.
Coming out of last May's Patriot League Championship regatta, the student-athletes knew they're not far from competing for, and winning, a league title.
"They came out of Patriots last year with that goal," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It was something they tried to cultivate over the course of the summer and they've been trying to live that each and every day."
One reason the Mountain Hawks' program continues to rise is its culture, led by its senior leaders.
"The seniors have really stepped up," said Conley. "This group has done a great job in terms of bringing our culture along, but at the same time, trying to keep things fun and exciting for them. And as the races approach, we'll find out what speed we have."
That strong culture also helps bring along newer members of the program, many of whom had never rowed previously.
"It's always fascinating to me to watch the novice group come in, not know anything about the sport of rowing, but be endeared by the rest of the team, learn a lot and be able to compete at this level," said Conley. "I think a lot of that is due to the culture that our team has produced over the course of the last several years. The more we keep embracing the culture of trying to win a championship and taking care of ourselves like the family we are, then anything can happen."
The Mountain Hawks got off to a strong start this school year with an impressive fall campaign. Three women's boats won medals, including two golds, at the prestigious Head of the Schuylkill. The Women's Championship Fours and Women's Frosh/Novice Eight were both victorious while the Women's Championships Eights finished third, and multiple other boats came in the top 10.
This spring season features a number of regattas, but all with one final goal in mind – the Patriot League Championships on Friday, May 13.
"The Varsity Eight has been moving well, and our 2V and our younger athletes are developing well," said Conley. "I'm excited to see what happens with each of the boats, but at the same time, all this goes towards the Patriot League Championship. We've got to race within our own boat. I'm seeing that develop within each of the boats each day."
Following Saturday's regatta, Lehigh returns to action next Saturday (Mar. 26) against Mercyhurst on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa. The men also open their season, facing Bucknell, Mercyhurst and Michigan.
