Lehigh set to rematch first-place Terriers in Boston

2/4/2022 2:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – There's a good deal of history between the Lehigh women's basketball team and Boston University at Case Gym in Boston, the site of where the Mountain Hawks won their fourth Patriot League Championship last March. On Saturday, the new rivalry renews between Lehigh and BU, facing off at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.

It's been a pretty nice bye week for Lehigh, getting a little more than week of rest before playing out the remainder of the season. The Mountain Hawks are coming off an important 67-61 win over Holy Cross last Friday night and look to hand the Terriers just their second Patriot League loss of the season after topping them the last time out between the two squads.

It was 3-point shooting party for Lehigh against the Crusaders, tallying 15 for the game, one shy of both the program and Patriot League-record 16 3-pointers converted by the Mountain Hawks last season. 12 of the team's 15 came in the first half and while the long range shooting quieted down dramatically over the final 20 minutes, Lehigh still hung on for the six-point win.

Sophomore guard Mackenzie Kramer once again had her name featured on the Patriot League's weekly honorable mention list after knocking down five 3-pointers to a tune of a team-high 18 points against Holy Cross. This was her second honorable mention nod of the year so far. In addition to Kramer, Emma Grothaus added 14 points, while Clair Steele finished with a season-high 11 points, along with her eight assists.

The Mountain Hawks have entered the homestretch of the season heading into the Patriot League Tournament with nine regular season games remaining on the docket, six of which are set to take place on the road.

Two individuals remain near the top of the national leaderboard for a variety of categories including Kramer, who sits fifth in 3-pointers made per game (3.15), sixth in total 3-pointers made (63) and 21st in total 3-pointers attempted (150). Steele is second in the country in assist turnover ratio (3.57) and 26th in assists per game (5.5).

Since a loss to Lehigh back on Jan. 22 at Stabler Arena, Boston University has won three straight games and nine of its last 10 dating back to Jan. 2 vs. Navy in its Patriot League opener.

The Terriers are 9-1 in Patriot League play, claiming sole possession of first place after defeating Bucknell on the road Wednesday, 67-58.

Sydney Johnson, who was named Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time this season on Monday, scored 23 points on eight field goals with five assists against the Bison. First-year Alex Giannaros and Maren Durant each added 10 points, while Caitlin Weimar led the way with 11 rebounds, pairing up nicely with her nine points, four assists and two blocks.

BU ended up shooting 44.6 percent (25-for-56) from the field in the win, including an efficient 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from beyond-the-arc. Bucknell led the Terriers, 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, but a 20-4 second in favor of BU helped control the game for the remainder of the contest.

Johnson has been excellent for Boston U. as of late, scoring in double-digits in each of her last 10 games, going for 20 or more points on four occasions during that stretch, all four coming in the last six contests.  Her last time out against the Mountain Hawks, Johnson scored 24 points to lead the Terriers in a losing effort.

BU's scoring offense is ranked third in the Patriot League at 62.6 points per game, holding opponents to the fifth-fewest amount of points in the league at 58.2 ppg.  The Terriers also hold the top mark in field goal percentage (.422), as well as 3-point field goal percentage (.344).

The Mountain Hawks have had history with Boston University in recent years as Saturday marks the 20th all-time meeting between the two schools. Lehigh leads the all-time series, 10-9 including 9-6 in Patriot League contests.

Lehigh has won three of the last four matchups including this season's previous matchup back on Jan. 22. The Mountain Hawks won the last meeting in Boston, 64-54 last March as Lehigh claimed its fourth Patriot League Championship.

Saturday's matchup will tip-off at 2 p.m., streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
