BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's lacrosse team scored twice in 1:41 in the fourth quarter to pull within one, but No. 14 Cornell answered with the game's final three goals to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 9-5 in Lehigh's home opener on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh's defense shined against a high-powered Big Red offense, holding it to one goal in the span of 26:24 through the middle stages of the game, and keeping the Mountain Hawks within striking distance.
Â
"Both teams played really good defense," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "That was the story of the game. I thought we played good defense, but we played too much of it. Part of that was what Cornell was doing, part of that was what we were doing. We struggled in the clear a little bit. I thought they did a nice job at the faceoff to give them some extra possessions and limit some of ours.
Â
"At the end of the day, I think the one positive for us was we played some pretty good defense."
Â
Sophomore Scott Cole led Lehigh's offense with three goals, good for his second straight hat trick. First year Dakota Eierman and junior Andrew Mapstone scored the Mountain Hawks' other goals, while senior Tommy Schelling dished two assists.
Â
Defensively, senior Anthony Tangredi posted three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Graduate student Teddy Leggett, junior Ryan Niggeman and first year Giovanni Procaccini each caused two turnovers.
Â
Senior Mike Sisselberger finished 10-of-18 with eight groundballs, becoming the eighth player in program history to eclipse 200 career GBs.
Â
Just over a minute into the game, Schelling fed Cole for a man-up goal and a quick 1-0 Lehigh lead.
Â
Cornell responded with the next four before Eierman finished his second goal in as many weeks with 8:26 left in the second quarter. From there, the teams traded goals, with Cole's second pulling Lehigh within 5-3 at the half.
Â
Early in the fourth, the Big Red scored the game's first goal in 19:25. But the Mountain Hawks got goals from Cole and Mapstone (a man-up goal) in the span of 1:41, to pull Lehigh within 6-5 with 8:17 still remaining. However, Cornell got goals at the 7:23, 7:00 and 5:21 marks to round out the 9-5 final.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will remain home next Saturday (Mar. 5) for their home opener, hosting Navy at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
