Lehigh Set to Host American on Senior Night Wednesday
2/22/2022 5:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the last week of the regular season upon us, the Lehigh men's basketball plays its final regular season home game on Wednesday as the Mountain Hawks host American at 7 p.m. on Senior Night. It's also 3's For a Cure Night presented by Red Robin in partnership with LLS. Prior to the game, Lehigh will recognize its senior class including Nic Lynch and Jeameril Wilson, and fifth-year senior Marques Wilson.
Wednesday is also a White Out as fans are encouraged to wear white. The first 200 Lehigh students will receive a FREE white Lehigh Basketball t-shirt.
The Mountain Hawks are currently in a tie for fourth place in the Patriot League standings, tied with Loyola at 8-8. The Greyhounds picked up a 69-42 win over the Mountain Hawks on Sunday and now own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Lehigh. However, if the Mountain Hawks win both their games this final week (also at Lafayette Saturday), and Loyola loses once (at Navy or at American), Lehigh would secure the No. 4 seed and a home game in next Thursday's Patriot League Quarterfinals. On the flip side, the Mountain Hawks are only one game ahead of a three-way tie for sixth place, as part of a very tightly-bunched middle of the standings.
The biggest highlight on Sunday was Lehigh's response after the Greyhounds jumped out to a 19-2 lead. The Mountain Hawks immediately answered with a 17-4 run to pull within 23-19. However, Loyola responded with a 15-0 run bridging the end of the first half and beginning of the second and wouldn't look back. Sophomore Dominic Parolin was a bright spot, scoring a team-high nine points in 19 minutes off the bench, knocking down 4-of-6 from the floor, including his only 3-point attempt. It marked his first three of the season. First year Ben Knostman was also a strong distributor, dishing five assists in 20 minutes off the bench and finishing +3 plus/minus on the evening.
Lehigh and American will square off for the first time since New Year's Day in the Patriot League opener for both teams. The Mountain Hawks erased a 19-point first-half deficit to win, 63-61. American was missing some key players, including its leading scorer Stacy Beckton Jr. Lehigh was also without Marques Wilson in that contest. The Eagles have been playing better lately, coming in winners of two of its last four - at Holy Cross and vs. Army. The Mountain Hawks have won 11 of their last 12 against American.
American stands 8-20 on the season, 4-12 in Patriot League play following a 63-49 loss at Colgate Monday night. The Eagles' last six games have alternated wins and losses, also picking up wins at Holy Cross (60-54) and against Army West Point (83-67). Beckton leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game; last season, he was named to the league's All-Defensive Team. Colin Smalls is next, averaging 10.6 points per game followed by Matt Rogers (9.7) and Johnny O'Neil (8.3). Rogers' 4.8 rebounds per contest lead the team while first year Elijah Stephens leads the Eagles in assists (65).
Lehigh has won 11 of its last 12 attempts against American, most recently coming back from a 19-point first-half deficit to beat the Eagles on New Year's Day. That marked the first meeting since American snapped Lehigh's 10-game winning streak in the series, 77-56 on Jan. 27, 2020. In those 10 victories, Lehigh didn't trail in seven of them. Overall, the Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series, 30-27. Lehigh has won six straight over American at home. Lehigh and American first played in 1960-61, a 71-61 American victory.
After Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks close out the regular season at archrival Lafayette on Saturday. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
