Mountain Hawks Fall at Loyola Maryland Sunday

2/20/2022 7:40:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BALTIMORE – Two big Loyola runs proved critical as the Greyhounds beat the Lehigh men's basketball team, 69-42 on Sunday in Reitz Arena. After trailing 19-2, the Mountain Hawks answered with a 17-4 run to pull within 23-19. However, Loyola staged a 15-0 run bridging the end of the first half and beginning of the second, to take a 41-21 lead, and Lehigh couldn't recover. Junior Dominic Parolin led the Mountain Hawks with nine points off the bench.

"We were out of sorts in the beginning of the game," said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. "Unfortunately, we didn't play well after a long hiatus and couldn't keep our rhythm. We showed some fight by getting three consecutive stops on two different occasions to get ourselves into the game. The start of the second half was more of the same from the beginning. Some of our bench guys fought and battled, but we didn't play well enough today."

Parolin finished 4-of-6 from the field, while adding two blocks as well. Senior Jeameril Wilson scored seven points.

Trailing 19-2 early, a Keith Higgins Jr. 3-pointer sparked the Mountain Hawks' run. After a Cam Spencer jumper, Lehigh scored the next nine points. First year Tyler Whitney-Sidney began with a layup and ended with a dunk off a feed from junior Evan Taylor, pulling the Mountain Hawks within 21-14 with 4:59 on the first-half clock. In between, Parolin knocked down his first 3-pointer of the season. Not long after, Taylor scored five straight points behind a 3-pointer and layup, to get Lehigh within 23-19 with 3:26 remaining in the first half.

A Higgins pull-up jumper got the Mountain Hawks within five at 26-21, but Loyola answered with a Golden Dike layup. In the final minute, Spencer hit a 3-pointer with 37 seconds on the clock and Jaylin Andrews followed with another three as the first half expired to give the Greyhounds a 34-21 advantage. Coming out of halftime, Loyola began with seven straight points and the Mountain Hawks could never recover.

For the game, the Mountain Hawks shot 29.8 percent from the field (17-of-57) and 21.1 percent from 3-point range (4-of-19). Loyola finished at 50.9 percent (29-of-57) and 45.0 percent from behind the arc (9-of-20). The Greyhounds held a 39-32 edge in rebounds, while Loyola had 14 turnovers to Lehigh's 16.
