Riding four-game win streak, Mountain Hawks head to Bucknell Wednesday
2/15/2022 4:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After defeating rival Lafayette by 24 points on the road in Easton Saturday, the Lehigh women's basketball team heads back on the trail to visit Bucknell in Lewisburg Wednesday at 6 p.m. from Sojka Pavilion. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required) and on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM in Easton.
Â
No doubt about it, Lehigh is peaking at the right time heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Mountain Hawks have won four straight and seven of their last eight games with just six to play before the start of the Patriot League Tournament.
Â
The Mountain Hawks cruised to a giant victory over the Leopards over the weekend, leading by as many as 27 and hanging on for the 76-52 final at Kirby Sports Center. Sophomore guard, who was named Patriot League Player of the Week for her performances throughout the week, scored a game-high 29 points on six 3-pointers with a career-high 11 field goals made. Senior forward Emma Grothaus registered her second straight double-double (sixth this year) with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Megan Walker also finished in double-figures with 12 points, adding six boards with four steals.
Â
Lehigh shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field and 32.1 percent (9-for-28) from beyond-the-arc in the victory.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are still heavily featured among the NCAA Division I team leaderboards at third in 3-pointers attempted (685), fourth in 3-pointers per game (9.9) and eighth in total 3-pointers made (227). They are also slotted at fourth in personal fouls per game (12.0) and eighth in fewest fouls (276).
Â
Lehigh heads into Wednesday night's contest a half game behind both Holy Cross and Boston U. for first place, playing one less game than the two opponents.
Â
Despite sitting in the middle of the pack in terms of the Patriot League standings, Bucknell is still in the right place at the right time with a few weeks remaining in the regular season.
Â
The Bison have won two of their last four and four of their last six games including a 66-49 victory at first-place Holy Cross on Saturday.
Â
Leading scorer Taylor O'Brien led Bucknell's offense with 17 points on 50 percent (6-for-12) shooting with six rebounds and three steals. Carly Krsul finished with 16 points and seven boards while shooting 8-of-12 from the floor. First year Cecelia Collins recorded a team-high 10 rebounds, while Marly Walls finished with a team-high four assists.
Â
The Bison shot 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the field in the win over the Crusaders including 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from downtown and just 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from the free throw line.
Â
Bucknell's defense did its job against Holy Cross, holding the Crusaders to just 28.3 percent (17-for-60) from the field and 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from beyond-the-arc.
Â
The Bison rank fourth in the Patriot League in scoring (61.6 ppg) and first in defense (53.7 ppg), as well as third in 3-point percentage (.328) and first in turnover margin (2.96).
Â
In recent years, it's been an all-out rivalry between Lehigh and Bucknell in women's basketball with the Bison leading the all-time series, 49-44 including a 40-25 edge in Patriot League contests.
Â
Bucknell has now won 10 straight games in the regular season, but had its overall series streak snapped by the Mountain Hawks in the Patriot League semifinals last March in Lewisburg.
Â
The Bison, who won the opener between the two teams earlier in January in Bethlehem, claimed all four regular season matchups last year - two at Stabler Arena and two at Sojka Pavilion.
