BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Rivalry renews Saturday in the first meeting between Lehigh and Lafayette this season. The game is set to tip off at 2 p.m. from Kirby Sports Center and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Winners of three straight and six of its last seven games, Lehigh is peaking at the right time with just seven games remaining on the regular season schedule. On Wednesday night vs. Colgate, the Mountain Hawks secured their fourth straight winning season with a 72-56 victory over the Raiders.
Aside from an early deficit in the first quarter, Lehigh led for the remainder of the contest and edged Colgate at Stabler Arena to earn the team its fourth straight home win and 12th this year. A 22-0 run between the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter proved to be the difference as the Mountain Hawks ran away with the 16-point win.
Senior forward Emma Grothaus registered her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding two blocks to her totals. Sophomore guard Mackenzie Kramer finished with a team-high 17 points while senior guard Megan Walker added 11 points with a team-high three steals.
With her double-digit point performance, Grothaus eclipsed the 900-point mark for her career and currently sits at 914, 86 shy from becoming the 21st player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She's also slotted at 599 career rebounds and with just one against Lafayette, would become just the 14th player to reach the 600-rebound plateau.
As a team, Lehigh recorded 12 3-pointers vs. the Raiders, the 11th time it finished with 10 or more treys in a game. Against Colgate, the Mountain Hawks set the new program record for 3-pointers made in a single season with 218, passing the previous mark of 212 held by both the 2010-11 and 2016-17 programs.
Senior point guard Clair Steele continues to be the Patriot League's most elite ball distributor this season, recording her third game with nine assists this year against Colgate. She needs to play just two more games to jump back onto the NCAA's leaderboard for assist-turnover ratio. At 3.96, her mark would qualify as the best in all of NCAA Division I women's basketball, ahead of Nevada's Kylie Gimenez (3.65) for second.
Rebounding with a 58-51 victory on Wednesday vs. Navy, Lafayette was coming off its toughest stretch of the year, an eight-game losing streak dating all the way back to Jan. 15 vs. Army West Point.
Since then, the Leopards are 4-8 in Patriot League play, holding on to the seventh seed in the standings with just six games to play in the regular season.
Lafayette was able to complete the season sweep of the Midshipmen on Wednesday, rallying back from an eight-point halftime deficit to out-score Navy, 35-20 in the second half to pick up the win.
First-year Claire Gallagher scored a career-high 21 points in the victory on five triples, while Makayla Andrews chipped in 11 points and Makalia Wilson had nine to go along with 18 rebounds. First year guard Abby Antognoli struggled shooting the ball (2-for-12 from the field) with just seven points, but finished with a team-high 10 assists while playing all 40 minutes on the floor.
The Leopards shot 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the field and 26.7 percent (8-for-30) from beyond-the-arc in the win, while going just 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from the free throw line.
Leading scorer Jess Booth (11.4 ppg) has missed time due to injury as of late, but Andrews is also averaging double-figures at 10.4 points per game. Wilson is Lafayette's leading rebounder at 8.2 per game, while in Booth's (3.7 assists per game) absence, Antognoli is averaging 2.5 apg.
Lafayette is last in scoring offense (53.2 ppg) this season, but third in scoring defense (57.9). The Leopards are also third in the league in shot blocking, averaging 4.05 per game this season.
It's been 101 matchups all-time in the storied Rivalry between Lehigh and Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks have the slight edge, 55-46. However, the Leopards are 28-20 against Lehigh in Easton.
The two teams played an unprecedented four times last season with Lehigh taking three of four matchups including both at Kirby Sports Center. The Mountain Hawks are winners of 12 of the last 14 games in the series dating back to Jan. 27, 2016.
