Three Mountain Hawks Place at Midlands Championships

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Eight members of the Lehigh wrestling program competed at the 58th Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 at NOW Arena. Three Mountain Hawks earned podium finishes with first-year Ryan Crookham (133) and sophomore Max Brignola (149) finishing in sixth place and junior Sheldon Seymour (125) claiming seventh place.

All eight entrants won at least one bout at the two-day event.

Crookham went 3-0 on Thursday capped by a 2-1 win over Rutgers' Joe Heilman to reach the semifinals. A third period takedown was the difference in a 3-1 loss to Chris Cannon of Northwestern. Crookham then medically forfeited his final two bouts to finish sixth.

Brignola wrestled a team-high eight bouts, going 5-3. He bounced back from a first round loss to win five straight bouts in the consolations, earning his podium spot with a come-from-behind 6-4 decision over Sam Hillegas from West Virginia. Following a win in the consolation quarterfinals, Brignola dropped his consolation semifinal and fifth place bout, both by decision.

One of two Mountain Hawks competing unattached, Seymour went 4-2 at 125. He joined Crookham as a championship quarterfinalist before running into top seed and eventual champion Eric Barnett of Wisconsin. He defeated Dylan Shawver of Rutgers to earn a top eight place and closed his tournament with a 15-5 major decision over Jacob Moran of Indiana.

First-year Killian Delaney went 1-1 at 125, earning an opening round victory before medically forfeiting out of the tournament.

Sophomores Paul Watkins (157) and Luca Frinzi (165), first-year Thayne Lawrence (174) and unattached junior JT Davis (184) all went 1-2, with Frinzi and Davis winning championship bracket bouts and Watkins and Lawrence earning their victories in the consolations.

The Mountain Hawks return to dual competition with a visit to Cornell on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m. and then will face Binghamton the following afternoon at 1 p.m.
