Lehigh’s Win-Streak Snapped at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Eleni Kountroubis scored the lone Lehigh goal on Friday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks fell to American, 3-1. The Lehigh field hockey program suffered its first loss since Sept. 17, snapping their six-game win streak.
The Mountain Hawks fall to 8-6 on the year and 3-2 in Patriot League action as the Eagles improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in league play this season.
"Not the result we hoped for," commented head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We continue to have work to do in defense transition, organization, and overlapping."
Lehigh would score on the only shot taken by either squad in the first quarter when Kountroubis beat the American goalkeeper off a pass from senior Sarah Bonthuis that gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 advantage late in first. Kountroubis notched her second goal of the year and Bonthuis recorded her eighth assist of the season.
American found the equalizer in the second quarter when senior Megan Hoffman found the back of the cage on a breakaway. Lehigh did have back-to-back penalty corners but were unable to regain the lead. The Eagles went ahead seven minutes after tying the contest as sophomore Federica Turina Dellamaggiore ripped a shot two steps inside the circle to put American ahead, 2-1.
The Mountain Hawks earned their fourth penalty corner of the half with nine seconds remaining and was able to get two shots off, but Lehigh would head into halftime trailing American 2-1.
After a scoreless third quarter with only one shot coming from Lehigh, American added its third straight goal early in the fourth quarter to extend its advantage to 3-1 off the stick of Turina Dellamaggiore scoring her tenth goal of the year.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn recorded five saves on the eight shots she faced and the Lehigh defense did not allow a single penalty corner in the match. The Mountain Hawks tallied seven total shots, with five going on cage, and earned four penalty corners, all of them coming in the first half of action.
"We created many goal-scoring opportunities that we couldn't finish. We have a lot to learn and a few hours to rebound before we take on Longwood," concluded Dallmeyer.
Lehigh travels to Farmville, Va. for a Sunday morning against the Lancers in a non-league contest beginning at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
