Schwab’s Second-Half Goal Lifts Lehigh over Longwood

10/16/2022 1:07:00 PM | Field Hockey

FARMVILLE, Va – The Lehigh field hockey squad concluded their road schedule with a 2-1 victory over Longwood in non-league action on Sunday morning. The Mountain Hawks improve to 9-6 on the year as the Lancers fall to 3-10 overall.

"Happy to end a long road trip with a win," stated head field hockey coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Maddie (Kahn) had a great day in goal for us, helping us stay locked in and keep momentum."

Lehigh would score on its only shot taken in the first quarter when first year Maddie Kandra scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from junior Abbie Brown that gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first. Senior Goalkeeper Maddie Kahn registered five saves in the first period, with a flurry of shots in the final ten seconds of the period.

Longwood found the equalizer in the second quarter when senior Kate Frey found the back of the cage with over five minutes to play until halftime.

The Mountain Hawks regained the lead in the third period when first year Kiki Mes sent a pass inside the circle from a distance and senior MJ Schwab managed to get a stick on the ball and deflect it into the back of the cage. This was Schwab's first goal of the season and Mes' third assist of the year. Lehigh would hold the advantage heading into the fourth period.

"We made adjustments in the second half that allowed us to fall into the passing game we wanted to play," added Dallmeyer.

Both squads recorded two shots and a penalty corner, but neither team was able to capitalize on those opportunities, resulting in Lehigh winning their final road contest of the season.

Kahn made seven saves on the eight shots she faced and improved her record to 9-6. The Mountain Hawks tallied ten total shots, with six going on cage, and earned two penalty corners, all of them coming in the first half of action.

"We will keep working on raising our intensity to level up and reach our potential by the end of the season," concluded Dallmeyer.

Lehigh returns home to Ulrich Field for a Patriot League match against Holy Cross on Saturday, Oct. 22. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
