Mountain Hawks Unable to Hold Late Lead in 2-2 Draw With Holy Cross

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Jack Sarkos scored with just over 10 minutes remaining to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead, but a man-down Holy Cross side found an equalizer in the 86th minute to earn a 2-2 draw on a wet Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks led twice in the contest, but the Crusaders answered both times, with Jack Ostrosky netting the tying goal.

Both teams come away with a point in the league standings as Lehigh is now 2-5-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in the league. Holy Cross is now 4-6-1 and picks up its first league point to move to 0-3-1. Lehigh remains unbeaten (2-0-2) in four home outings so far this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Gross made a diving stop on a shot by Matt McMonigle in the seventh minute on Holy Cross' best chance of the first half.

Lehigh broke through in the 40th minute as a long ball from the sideline by sophomore Yoni Aidlberg connected with senior Dominic Flowers, who waited and then put a left footed shot into the lower right corner for his first goal of the season, as the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Holy Cross tied the game in the 58th minute as Bergin Kranz fired a rocket from outside the box that banged off the bottom of the crossbar and went in for his second goal of the season.

The Mountain Hawks went back in front in the 80th minute as first-year Jason Pynadath made a run down the right side and centered the ball to Sarkos who knocked it down with the right foot and then sent a shot into the lower left corner for his seventh goal of the season.
Less than a minute after Sarkos' goal, Holy Cross goalkeeper Josh Tubbs was sent off for a challenge against Sarkos outside the area. In the 86th minute, Holy Cross put a ball in the box and after a scramble, Ostrosky netted the equalizer to tie the game at 2-2, which is how the game would end.

Holy Cross had a 13-12 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corners. The contest featured nine cards, with two yellows issued to the Mountain Hawks and six yellows given to the Crusaders in addition to the red card to Tubbs.

Gross finished with six saves for the Mountain Hawks.

"It has been evident to me that in the most important moments of the game we're just lacking leadership and direction," Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said. "We're not getting it from our upperclassmen and our seniors and it's incredibly frustrating because our younger players are looking for direction and they're just not getting it in those critical moments."

Lehigh is back home Tuesday night to host Drexel at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 6 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
