Mountain Hawks Fall 35-7 To Visiting Monmouth

10/1/2022 4:56:00 PM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On an overcast, wet day at Goodman Stadium, Monmouth built a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back in a 35-7 win over Lehigh, Saturday on Dog Day, presented by JFR Salvage. The visiting Hawks raced to a 35-0 lead before sophomore Gaige Garcia scored on a one-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard.

Monmouth, which boasts one of the nation's top offenses, racked up 490 total yards and capitalized on several big plays in the first half. Lehigh mustered 303 yards of offense, and turned the ball over twice while going 0-for-3 on fourth down conversions. The Mountain Hawks did create two turnovers in the second half.

The loss drops Lehigh to 1-4 on the season, while Monmouth improves to 3-2.

"We lost to a very good team," Lehigh head coach Tom Gilmore said. "We got dominated in the process. Nobody is happy with this result. We have to evaluate everything that we're doing. We're going to have to figure out how we can execute a lot better moving forward."

Lehigh's defense held Monmouth to a three-and-out on the game's opening possession and a promising first drive for the Mountain Hawks ended with no points after a missed field goal.

Monmouth answered with a 10-play, 77-yard drive and took a 7-0 lead on an Owen Wright one yard touchdown run.

In the second quarter, Monmouth quarterback Tony Muskett connected on a pair of long touchdown passes to help give the Hawks a 21-0 halftime lead. Muskett hit Dymere Miller on a 39-yard score on the first drive of the second quarter and then connected with Assanti Kearney for 52 yards and a score.

The Hawks scored on their first two drives of the third quarter to go up 35-0 as Muskett scored on a 10-yard scramble and then threw a three-yard scoring pass to Darrion Carrington.

First-year quarterback Brayten Silbor came on at halftime in relief of junior Dante Perri and led Lehigh on a touchdown drive late in the third quarter. Silbor connected with classmate Geoffrey Jamiel on a 42-yard catch-and run on the first play of the drive. The six-play scoring drive was capped by a one-yard plunge by Garcia to put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard.

Silbor finished 10-for-22 for 139 yards passing, while Perri was 7-for-13 for 60 yards. Junior Eric Johnson had a team-high five catches for 48 yards. Jamiel had a team-leading 82 yards on three receptions.

Lehigh rushed for 104 yards as a team, led by Garcia, who had 71 yards on eight carries. Senior Zaythan Hill added 31 yards on 11 carries.

Muskett completed 20-of-27 for 261 yards for Monmouth with three touchdowns and an interception. Miller caught a game-high nine for 125.

Lehigh's defense held Jaden Shirden, who entered Saturday as the leading rusher in the FCS at 166 yards per game to 108 yards on 20 carries. Muskett rushed for 56 yards while Wright gained 51.

Junior linebacker Mike DeNucci had a game-high 11 tackles for Lehigh and added two sacks and a forced fumble.

"I know we have a lot of tough, resilient guys in that locker room and I know they're going to come out with a vengeance and get ready to play a league game against Fordham next week," Gilmore said. We have a lot to work on obviously. We have to get back to work tomorrow and make a lot of improvements."

The Mountain Hawks return to Goodman Stadium next Saturday to host Fordham on Tackle Cancer Day, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Game time is set for noon and tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.

EXTRA POINTS… Monmouth has now won the last four meetings in the series after Lehigh won the first five… junior LaTreil Wimberly recorded his second career interception in the fourth quarter… DeNucci's second sack of the day resulted in a fumble that was recovered by senior Dean Colton… Lehigh finished even in turnover margin for the first time in five games this season… senior Mikhari Sibblis added seven tackles to Lehigh's defensive effort… first-year DJ Brown had the first three carries of his career and also caught two passes for four yards.
