BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After starting the Patriot League schedule off with a victory Sunday at Colgate, the Lehigh women's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena Wednesday night at 6 p.m. to host Army West Point on Salute to Service presented by Weis Markets.
The Mountain Hawks (9-3, 1-0 PL) kicked off the league slate with a 72-52 final over the Raiders, which signaled a 1-0 start to PL for the fifth season in a row. Senior forward Emma Grothaus led the way with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and excelled on the defensive side of the ball with a season-high five blocks and four steals. Senior Megan Walker scored 16 points on four 3-pointers while junior Anna Harvey registered a career-high 13 points with four boards and four assists.
Lehigh struggled shooting the ball overall in the first half, but made adjustments and shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) in the final two quarters and drilled nine 3-pointers as a squad. Defensively, the Mountain Hawks held Colgate to 40.4 percent from the field and just four treys, while out-rebounding them, 36-31.
Lehigh's scoring offense is the best in the Patriot League, averaging 76.5 points per game, less than 10 points from second-place Army. Lehigh's scoring defense is the sixth-best in the league at 61.6 points per game.
Four Mountain Hawks continue to average double-figures in points this year headlined by sophomore Mackenzie Kramer (16.3 ppg), while Frannie Hottinger (15.3), Grothaus (13.2) and Walker (11.4) trail closely behind. While senior point guard Clair Steele technically remains as the team's leading assist-getter at 6.0 per game, she's missed each of the previous five games.
Despite failing to record one on Sunday against the Raiders, Kramer continues to be ranked ninth in the country in 3-pointers made per game (3.25) and is 11th in total 3-pointers made (39).
After a somewhat so-so non-league portion of the schedule where Army West Point finished 5-4, the Black Knights (6-4, 1-0 PL) recorded their most impactful victory in recent memory on Sunday afternoon, stunning Bucknell 69-62 at Christl Arena.
The victory over the Bison was Army's first since 2016. Alisa Fallon led the Black Knights with 24 points and 11 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes on the floor. Against Yale earlier in the week, she scored 20 points with nine boards and was named Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday for both of her performances.
In addition to Fallon, Kate Murray also starred in the win, scoring 19 points with six boards and five assists. Sabria Hunter had a 12-rebound, 14-rebound double-double and shot 6-of-10 from the field. Army shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) from the field and shot 45 percent (9-for-20) as a team from beyond-the-arc.
With five teams starting the Patriot League slate at 1-0, Army and Lehigh will battle for first place and the ability to improve to 2-0.
In the non-league schedule, Army defeated Sacred Heart, Air Force, Maine, LIU and Bryant.
Through the first 10 games of the season, the Black Knights lead the league in four stat categories including offensive rebounds per game (15.9), rebound margin (4.8), rebounds per game (41.8) and steals per game (8.6). In ORPG, Army is ranked 19th in the nation.
In 70 meetings, the all-time series between Lehigh and Army West Point is tied, 35-35. In Patriot League contests, the Mountain Hawks hold the edge, 31-29 and are 21-11 all-time at Stabler Arena against the Black Knights.
Lehigh has come out on top in each of the last four meetings, but have not faced Army West Point since the 2019-20 season. The Mountain Hawks got the win in both matchups during that season, a 94-65 win at Christl Arena and an 89-72 victory at Stabler.
The Mountain Hawks have won three straight games at Stabler Arena in the regular season series dating back to Jan. 20, 2018.
Wednesday night's matchup will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required) with Corey Spector on the play-by-play call. Steve Lomangino has the call on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM.
