Mountain Hawks, Raiders Set to Square off in Stabler Tuesday Night
1/3/2022 3:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of two straight, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home on Tuesday night to host Colgate. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. The Mountain Hawks look to build off their Patriot League opening comeback win at American, while Tuesday will mark the Raiders' league opener - after their New Year's Day game at Lafayette was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Leopards' program.
Â
American used an early 17-0 run on Saturday to take a 30-11 lead, but the Mountain Hawks had a big answer from there. Lehigh responded by outscoring the Eagles, 46-19, over the next 18:47 to take an eight-point, 57-49, lead on the way to the 63-61 victory. It marked Lehigh's fifth win in its last six Patriot League openers (to improve to 20-12 all-time in league openers) and the Mountain Hawks' 11th win in their last 12 tries against American.
Â
Junior Evan Taylor led the offense vs. the Eagles, scoring a career-high 25 points, 16 coming after halftime to earn honorable mention on the Patriot League weekly honor roll. In the process, Taylor eclipsed 500-career points. He tied or set career highs in minutes played (37), field goals made (10) and field goals attempted (16) while adding six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Taylor's point total was the most by a Mountain Hawk since Marques Wilson scored 26 on Jan. 16, 2021 at Bucknell. First year Keith Higgins Jr. followed up a career-high 18 points with 13 at American, 11 coming after halftime. He shot 6-of-11 from the floor while posting his first-career steal (finishing with three). Senior Nic Lynch tied a season-high 12 points as well, nine of which were in the first half. First year Tyler Whitney-Sidney was a spark off the bench, scoring Lehigh's first four points of the second half and finishing with a game-high plus/minus of plus 16.
Â
Lehigh's 19-point comeback was its largest since also coming back from 19 points down at Army West Point on Feb. 2, 2019. Saturday was the Mountain Hawks' first road victory of the season.
Â
Tuesday will mark head coach Brett's 200th career game at Stabler Arena; he owns a 136-63 record at home. The Mountain Hawks have picked up double-figure home wins under Reed in eight seasons.
Â
Colgate stands 4-9 on the season, having lost its last four and seven of its last eight. The Raiders had their Patriot League opener at Lafayette postponed, so haven't been in action since Dec. 22 at Vermont - a 78-68 defeat. They have been without their leading scorer, and preseason All-Patriot League honoree, Nelly Cummings since Dec. 9 due to injury. Cummings is averaging 17.6 points per game, third in the league, and he's followed by Jack Ferguson (12.1) and Tucker Richardson (10.8). Keegan Records leads the Raiders in rebounding (6.2) (to go with an 8.7 scoring average). Richardson owns a team-leading 56 assists. Colgate picked up an impressive 100-85 nonleague victory at Syracuse, while its other wins have come over Northeastern, SUNY Poly and Columbia. The Raiders stand eighth in the nation in 3-pointers made per game (11.1) and 11th in 3-point percentage (39.1).
Â
Lehigh and Colgate last played in the 2020 Patriot League Quarterfinals, an 83-70 Raiders' win in Hamilton to give them five straight wins in the series and a 57-41 all-time advantage. The teams were scheduled to play last season, but didn't due to late-season scheduling adjustments around the league due to COVID-19. Even with the Raiders' recent success, Lehigh and Colgate have split the last 12 meetings. Lehigh's last victory vs. the Raiders came on Feb. 14, 2018 at Colgate, a game that saw then-rookie Marques Wilson score a career-high 28 points. Four of the last six meetings overall have come at Colgate. The first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Colgate was in 1909-10, a 25-24 Colgate win. Lehigh's first victory was in 1961-62 by a 72-71 final
Â
Following Tuesday's game, the Mountain Hawks travel to West Point on Friday to face Army at 5 p.m.
