Fourth quarter run too much to overcome in Lehigh's loss to Army

1/26/2022 8:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Able to cut the deficit to one point by the end of the third quarter, the Lehigh women's basketball team struggled moving forward, being out-scored 21-9 in the final stanza as Army West Point prevailed, 70-57 Wednesday evening at Christl Arena. The loss snaps the Mountain Hawks' (13-6, 5-3 PL) three-game win streak as Lehigh drops to 3-4 on the road for the 2021-22 campaign.

Sophomore guard Mackenzie Kramer was a bright spot for the Mountain Hawks, scoring a team-high 21 points on three 3-pointers. Senior Megan Walker added 15 points with six rebounds and a steal, while Emma Grothaus chipped in six points with seven boards. Lehigh shot just 34.8 percent (23-for-66) from the field and 21.4 percent (6-for-28) from beyond-the-arc in the defeat.

"We were not able to get a lot of defensive stops in the fourth quarter tonight which limited our transition game greatly," said head coach Sue Troyan. "This, combined with the fact that we didn't make a lot of our open shots led to a poor offensive performance. Give credit to Army's defense in the fourth quarter.

"They played with a toughness that we did not match on either end."

Army scored first, but the Mountain Hawks quickly took over in the first quarter, going on a 7-2 run with 7:36 to play. The Black Knights trimmed the deficit to three heading into the media timeout at the 4:40 mark. Both offenses came to life to conclude the frame, as Alisa Fallon hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left to go ahead, 19-17 after the first 10 minutes of play.

A two-point lead turned into nine for the Black Knights pretty swiftly, as Army took a 26-17 lead with 7:34 left. Kramer hit a 3-pointer to cut the gap to six with 7:22 on the clock, causing Army to take a 30-second timeout. Out of the timeout, Army scored seven straight points to lead 33-20 with 5:24 remaining. Lehigh was able to cut the deficit to as little as three points with 1:39 to go and Grothaus converted on a layup with 34 seconds left to keep the Mountain Hawks within striking distance at three points heading into the locker room.

First year Meghan O'Brien brought the Mountain Hawks within one point of Army to kick off the third quarter, but the Black Knights quickly went back in front by six following five points in a row. Back-to-back baskets from Walker and Kramer had Lehigh within two and a layup from Jamie Behar tied the game up at 41-41 with 5:26 to go, but it was short-lived as Sabria Hunter sunk a driving layup to put Army back up by two points with 3:57 remaining on the clock. Six straight points for Army, all courtesy of a pair of Kate Murray treys had the Black Knights up by seven with 1:11 to go, but Lehigh's 6-0 run to conclude the third stanza kept things close at 49-48 heading into the final 10 minutes.

There never was much of a contest in the fourth quarter as Lehigh managed to trail by as little as three points on two occasions to open the frame up, but the Black Knights scored 10 of the next 15 points to lead 63-55 at the media timeout with 4:09 to play. Army controlled the tempo for the remainder of the half, out-scoring the Mountain Hawks 7-2 over the final four minutes to prevail, 70-57.

Army West Point dominated Lehigh in multiple categories including rebounds (48-39), points in the paint (34-30), second chance points (15-10) and bench points (15-10). The Mountain Hawks finished with the edge in points off turnovers (9-4) and points off fast breaks (11-2). Lehigh committed just eight turnovers, while forcing 10 on seven steals and a pair of blocks.

Three Black Knights scored in double-figures led by Kate Murray with 22 points and seven rebounds, 16 points and seven boards for Sabria Hunter and a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double for Alisa Fallon. Army shot 39.7 percent (27-for-68) from the field and 28.1 percent (9-for-32) from long range.

The Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena on Saturday to take on Holy Cross at 2 p.m. on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Lehigh women's basketball alumna and current WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert '86 will serve as the guest coach and will speak at halftime of the game. Service Electric Network will broadcast Saturday's game, simulcasted live on ESPN+ (subscription required).

"The great thing about our league schedule is that we get right back at it with a big game on Saturday," Troyan said. "We challenged our kids to bring a heightened level of toughness to the game on Saturday and I'm excited to see how they will respond."
