Mountain Hawks host UMBC in mid-week tilt

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team continues its homestand on Tuesday night, hosting UMBC at 7 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex, for the second straight home contest. The Mountain Hawks (0-5-1, 0-1-0 PL) are coming off a 2-1 loss to Loyola Maryland on Saturday night to kick off the Patriot League schedule. Tuesday night's matchup with the Bulldogs will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Lehigh scored first against the Greyhounds on Saturday, a Dominic Flowers goal in the third minute that put the team up 1-0. Loyola equalized on a penalty kick in the 17th minute and then pulled ahead in the 53rd minute on a goal by Kelan Swales, as it held on for the victory.
The Mountain Hawks out-shot Loyola, 22-9 including 15-4 in the second half, while also grabbing 10 corner kick chances while the Greyhounds fouled 21 times. Despite seven shots in the final four minutes of the second half, Lehigh went without a goal for the final 87 minutes of the game.
Flowers, who scored the goal, recorded a team-high four shots including two on goal. Trevor Koski, Josh Luchini and Michael Tahiru had three shots each, while Euan Forrest and Perry Kingson had a pair.
In six games to start the season, Luchini continues to lead the way in goals with two while Forrest has two assists. Luchini's 18 shots and seven shots on goal is also the best mark on the team by far.
Senior Noah Sutherland was the starter in goal for the Mountain Hawks, making two saves on eight shots faced. He has a goals against average of 1.42 in four starts for Lehigh this season, making a total of 19 saves with a record of 0-3-1.
The Mountain Hawks are still searching for their first victory of the 2021 season, the longest streak to start a season since starting 0-7 in 2012.
UMBC is 4-2-1 heading into Tuesday's matchup with Lehigh, coming off back-to-back victories over Hartford and Mount St. Mary's. It has won four of its last five matchups with a loss at LIU on Sept. 11. The Retrievers opened the season with a 2-2 draw against Patriot League foe Navy on Aug. 26.
Ryan Becher has been phenomenal for UMBC to start the season, scoring five goals with two assists for 12 points in seven games. Taylor Calheira has four goals and four assists while Julian Conze has three goals and four assists thus far. As a team, the Retrievers have totaled 16 goals and 16 assists in seven games, averaging 2.29 goals per game.
In goal, two keepers have shared seven games with Jailon Gillespie leading the way with a GAA of 1.31 and eight saves in three starts. Quantrell Jones has a 2.08 GAA with 13 saves in four starts for UMBC.
Tuesday marks the fifth matchup between Lehigh and UMBC, the first meeting since 2007. The all-time series is tied, 2-2. The Mountain Hawks were victorious at home, 3-0 back on Sept. 19, 2007. Lehigh has won two straight against the Retrievers, having not lost since Oct. 30, 1991 on the road, a season before the Dean Koski era started in Bethlehem.
