First 25 minutes haunt Mountain Hawks in shutout loss to UMBC

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Taylor Calheira scored three times in the first 25 minutes, as UMBC downed Lehigh 3-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex Tuesday evening.

The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 0-6-1 to start the season as the team heads back into Patriot League play Saturday on the road at American.

"I told the team at halftime that in my 30 years of coaching at Lehigh, that was one of the worst 45 minutes of soccer that I've seen one of my teams play," said The Ingrassia Family Men's Head Soccer Coach Dean Koski. "Just in terms of heart, character, commitment, teamwork, it was really disappointing. I was incredibly disappointed with most of the starting XI and we didn't come ready to play tonight. That was really disappointing.

"I was really pleased with the guys that stepped up in the second half, getting guys some playing time that haven't played a lot and I thought they played the way we should have played in the first half. Unfortunately, these are guys that we didn't think we were going to need and now we might need them, because a core of our starters and some of our most important players didn't play with the level of commitment they need to be to be successful."

Lehigh had two header shots blocked in the first three minutes before UMBC knocked in its first goal of the contest, as Calheira put the Retrievers (5-2-1) out to a 1-0 lead on a goal assisted by Ryan Becher and Jago Lott.

Calheira found the back of the net a second time in the 10th minute, a header off the Julian Conze helper.

Hassane Diakho had Lehigh's first real opportunity of the contest in the 19th minute that hit the crossbar, with two shots by Trevor Koski and Jack Sarkos missing the mark.

After Calheira missed a shot wide in the 25th, he came through with a hat trick in the 26th off the assist from Conze.

In the final six minutes of the first half, the Mountain Hawks fired off three shots that were saved by the UMBC keeper.

Much like Saturday's defeat to Loyola Maryland, Lehigh dominated the attacking third in the second half, out-shooting the Retrievers 12-4 during that span. Of those 12, five of which were on goal including two in the final minute as the team attempted to score at least one goal to avoid the shutout.

UMBC's goalkeeper Jailon Gillespie made a game-high eight saves to earn the shutout and the 3-0 victory.

For Lehigh, three players tallied three shots (Euan Forrest, Jack Sarkos, Valentine Perevalov), while a quartet had two (Trevor Koski, Josh Luchini, Austen Carranza, Perry Kingson). Goalkeeper Noah Sutherland made five saves and allowed three goals to drop to 0-4-1 on the season in his five starts.

Lehigh is winless through its first seven games for the first time since 2012 (0-7). UMBC now leads the all-time series, 3-2 between the two sides.

Saturday afternoon's matchup with the Eagles starts at 2 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
