BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team plays its final non-league tune-up before Patriot League play begins on Saturday evening, taking on Fairleigh Dickinson Tuesday night at University Stadium.
The Mountain Hawks (0-4-0) are still in search of their first victory of the 2021 season, however, the offense showed up to play against a tough Rutgers squad on Friday night. Senior forward Josh Luchini knocked in his first goal of the year off a succession of headers following a Michael Tahiru free kick to tie the game at one early in the second half.
Fifth year senior Stevo Bednarsky was able to push Lehigh ahead on what was supposed to be a cross in front of the goal, but was ricocheted off the Rutgers defender and in for the own goal.
Two straight scores from the Scarlet Knights' offense in the second half put the game out of reach as Rutgers held on for the 3-2 win.
Luchini and Bratislav Petkovic have scored two of Lehigh's three goals this season so far, while junior defender Euan Forrest grasps to the team lead in assists with a pair.
In net, senior Noah Sutherland and sophomore Blake Koski have split duties between the pipes, each starting two contests. Sutherland leads the team with a 1.50 GAA, making seven saves on 27 shots faced.
A win over the Knights on Tuesday would snap Lehigh's longest losing streak to start a season since 2012 (0-7 start).
FDU is 2-3-0 in its first five games to start the season with victories over Patriot League opponents Armyt West Point (1-0) on Aug. 30 and Lafayette (3-0) on Sept. 7. The Knights are coming off a 2-1 loss to Fordham on Saturday.
A pair of attackers lead the way in goals for FDU, headlined by Noah Chia and Joshua Ferreira with two goals each. Diego Arribas has two helpers to pace the team. In goal, a combination of three keepers have seen action this season with Vinicius Cadengue and Spencer King each making two starts. Cadengue leads the Knights with a GAA of 1.20 and 13 total saves, getting one shutout with a 1-2-0 record.
The all-time series between Lehigh and FDU is all knotted up at 7-7-4 in a matchup that dates all the way back to 1979. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Knights, 1-0 on the road back on Sept. 13, 2016 and have won three straight meetings between the two squads since the 2014 season.
Tuesday night's matchup will be streamed live on NEC Front Row at 7 p.m.
