BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh right-handed pitcher Mason Black has been named a Second Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Black was selected to the Academic All-District team at the beginning of July and has now been voted an All-American by members of CoSIDA and the Academic All-America Committee among others.
Â
The CoSIDA Academic All-America honor is the second for a Lehigh baseball player. Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame member Frank Zawatski '73 was Lehigh University's first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American with his first team honor in 1972.
Â
On July 12, Black was selected in the third round, No. 85 overall by the San Francisco Giants in the MLB Draft. He is the second-highest drafted player in program history and the highest drafted pitcher.
Â
One of three Lehigh players named to the Academic All-Patriot League team in May, Black carried a 3.80 cumulative GPA as a bioengineering major. The CoSIDA threshold for Academic All-District and Academic All-American is 3.30.
Â
In his third season with the Mountain Hawks, Black went 7-3 with a 3.11 ERA in 13 starts. Black struck out 95 batters, walked 31 and held hitters to a .235 batting average. His 95 strikeouts are a single-season program record, which broke Lehigh Athletics Hall of Famer Craig Anderson's record from 1960.
Â
Black was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, a First Team All-Patriot League selection and an ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-East Region selection for his performances.
Â
The Archbald, Pa., native signed his contract with the Giants earlier this month. In his three-year career, Black went 11-5 with a 3.53 ERA. He had 152 strikeouts and 51 walks over 127.1 innings, holding batters to a .236 average.
