Junior right-hander highest drafted pitcher in program history
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Just the 18th player in Lehigh baseball program history to get picked up by a big-league franchise and the 15th player drafted, junior right-hander Mason Black was selected in the third round, pick No. 85 overall by the San Francisco Giants in the 2021 MLB Draft Monday afternoon.
Black is the second-highest drafted player in program history and the highest drafted pitcher.
He was fantastic in his third season with the Mountain Hawks, going 7-3 with a 3.11 ERA in 13 starts. Black struck out 95 batters, walked 31 and held hitters to a .235 batting average. His 95 strikeouts are a single-season program record, which broke Lehigh Athletics Hall of Famer Craig Anderson's record from 1960. He struck out 10 or more batters in six games with four complete games and two shutouts to close out the regular season.
Black was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, a First Team All-Patriot League selection and an ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-East Region selection for his performances. He is Lehigh's second Pitcher of the Year winner in program history and first since Dave Cerminaro in 2002.
After signing his contract in the coming days, Black will have concluded his historic, successful Lehigh career with a 11-5 record, 3.53 ERA with 152 strikeouts and 51 walks over 127.1 innings, holding batters to a .236 average.
Black joins current minor league pitchers and Lehigh alumni Mark Washington (Dodgers), Levi Stoudt (Mariners) and Jason Reynolds (Padres) on the Road to the Show.
