BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of student-athletes from the Lehigh baseball program were named Academic All-District 2 selections by CoSIDA, announced on Thursday afternoon for their top-notch performances in the classroom and on the field for the 2021 season. Junior right-handed pitcher Mason Black and senior outfielder Eric Cichocki were honored for their accomplishments.
Black and Cichocki represent just the third and fourth Academic All-District selections in program history and the first since Chris Kersey in 2018.
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA whose schools are in the region. District 2 consists of schools from Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better and be a starter or key reserve.
Black carries a 3.80 cumulative grade point average in bioengineering and was one of three Lehigh players named to the Academic All-Patriot League team in May. On the field, he was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Year and a First Team All-Patriot League selection, going 7-3 with a 3.11 ERA in 13 starts. He struck out a single-season record 95 batters, walking 31, holding hitters to a .235 average. In addition to his league accolades, Black earned ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-East Region honors. A highly-touted prospect in the upcoming MLB Draft, Black will become the 18th player in program history drafted when he hears his name called.
Joining Black on the list is Cichocki, who was also named an Academic All-Patriot League selection. He achieved a cumulative 3.94 GPA in Mechanical Engineering and IBE Finance and was recognized for it. Taking over in right field for the first time in his career, Cichocki had strong season and was named First Team All-Patriot League for the first time. He slashed .297/.424/.406 with 47 hits, a team-best 12 doubles, 15 walks and nine stolen bases in his 41 games.
