Lehigh Closes Out Regular Season With Senior Day Sweep Of Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a day in which the Mountain Hawks honored their senior class, Lehigh closed out the regular season with a pair of five-inning victories over Lafayette Sunday at Leadership Park. Lehigh scored in all four times at bat in winning game one 9-1 and then used an eight run first inning to claim game two by an 8-0 score.
Sunday's victories secured a four-game series sweep of Lafayette and gives the Mountain Hawks an eight-game winning streak heading into the Patriot League Tournament, where Lehigh will be the No. 2 seed. Lehigh finishes the regular season at 16-14 overall and 14-8 in the Patriot League.
Freshman pitchers Katelyn Young and Ansley Dambach combined to allow just one run on eight hits over 10 innings.
Lehigh scored a run in the bottom of the first inning of game one as freshman Brooke Cannon singled home junior Carley Barjaktarovich. The Mountain Hawks then broke the game open in the second inning on RBI singles by sophomore Emily Cimino, junior Jaelynn Chesson and Cannon and a two-run double by junior Karsen O'Rourke.
The seventh Lehigh run came home in the third as sophomore Josie Charles scored when Barjaktarovich reached on a dropped throw at first base.
Lafayette (1-21, 1-17 PL) scored its lone run of the day in the top of the fourth on Julia Roman's two-out RBI single, but Lehigh answered with two in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single by senior Allyson Dibsie.
Young picked up her eighth victory of the season, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Lehigh had 10 hits in game one, led by Cannon's two RBI singles.
Mountain Hawk seniors Payton Alsobrooks and Allyson Dibsie were recognized in between games of the doubleheader.

Game two saw Lehigh do all of its damage in the bottom of the first inning. Cimino reached on an error with one out and then back-to-back walks loaded the bases. O'Rourke singled through the left side bringing Cimino home with the game's first run and then freshman Amanda Greaney followed with a bases-clearing three-run double to left to put the Mountain Hawks up 4-0.
Alsobrooks drew a bases loaded walk to put Lehigh up 5-0 and Barjaktarovich picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice before Cimino capped the eight-run inning with a two-run double to left.
Lehigh had base runners in every inning of game two but could not add on to its lead. Dambach allowed five hits but picked up her first career victory and shutout, walking one and striking out one.
Lafayette's biggest threat came in the third inning when the Leopards had runners and second and third with one out, but Dambach induced a comebacker from Julia Romano and then junior Melissa Fedorka threw Kristen Rarick out at the plate to end the threat.
O'Rourke and Greaney combined for four of Lehigh's eight hits in game two.
Lehigh will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament which begins Thursday at BU Softball Field in Boston. Boston University is the host and top seed, with Colgate and Army West Point rounding out the field.
