BOSTON – Junior Gabriella Nori fired a two-hit shutout and the lower half of Lehigh's lineup delivered some big hits as the Mountain Hawks opened the Patriot League Tournament with a 7-0 victory over Colgate Thursday at BU Softball Field.
The Mountain Hawks scored a run in the second inning and then created some separation with a four-run third to pick up their ninth straight victory. Lehigh will now meet top seed and host Boston University in Friday's first game.
Nori was outstanding on the way to her third shutout of the season. She allowed just five base runners in the complete game effort. She walked Colgate leadoff hitter Virginia Irby once and then hit her with pitches in her next two plate appearances. Morgan Farrah followed Irby's second two plate appearances with Colgate's only two hits, a single in the third and a double in the sixth, but on both occasions, Nori worked out of trouble to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard.
The first team All-Patriot League selection struck out seven. Nori extended her streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run to 36. She is now 8-5 on the season.
Lehigh finished with nine hits on the day. Sophomore Emily Cimino went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman Amanda Greaney went 2-for-2.
Greaney led off the bottom of the second inning with a double down the left field line. Pinch runner Bella Egizio was sacrificed to third and came home with the game's first run on a ground out by junior Melissa Fedorka.
The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the third on infield singles by junior Carley Barjaktarovich and Cimino and an error on a ball hit by junior Jaelynn Chesson. Following a fielder's choice for the first out, junior Karsen O'Rourke singled to left center, scoring Cimino with Lehigh's second run of the day. Greaney then brought home a run with an infield single. Sophomore Josie Charles then hit a chopper up the middle that went through for a two-run single, giving Lehigh a 5-0 advantage after three innings.
Lehigh added a single run in the fifth when freshman Brooke Cannon scored on a wild pitch, and one more in the sixth when Barjaktarovich stole home as part of a double steal with Cimino.
Bailey Misken took the loss for Colgate, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work. Bella Crow was effective in 3.2 innings of relief but gave up a pair of runs, one of which was earned.
Lehigh improves to 17-14 with the win, while Colgate falls to 16-14-1 with the loss.
The Mountain Hawks will face Boston University in Friday's first game at BU Softball Field with game time set for 11 a.m. The winner of that game will advance to Saturday's championship round, while the losing team will face the winner of Friday's elimination game between Colgate and Army West Point in a second elimination game at 4 p.m. Video coverage of the entire Patriot League Tournament is available on ESPN+.
