Mountain Hawks to Open Patriot League Tournament Thursday Against Colgate in Boston

5/12/2021 4:47:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of eight straight games to close out the regular season, Lehigh heads to Boston for the 2021 Patriot League Softball Tournament, slated for Thursday through Saturday at BU Softball Field. Boston University the two-time defending tournament champion and is hosting for the third straight time.

Lehigh has won a league-best 14 tournament titles, most recently in 2017, and reached the finals in 2018 and 2019. The Mountain Hawks took two from Bucknell April 25, two from Holy Cross on May 2 and then four from Lafayette last weekend to close out the regular season at 16-14 overall and 14-8 in the league. The second seeded Mountain Hawks will open the double elimination tournament against No. 3 seed Colgate. No. 4 seed Army West Point will open the tournament against host and top seed Boston U.

Per Boston University policy regarding visitors on campus, spectators are not allowed at any athletic event during the Spring semester. For BU Athletics outdoor facilities, this restriction includes all areas surrounding the venue. Please be advised that any visitors who gather to watch an event will be asked to leave the area by game management personnel.

Four Mountain Hawks were recognized as the Patriot League announced its postseason awards earlier this week. Junior shortstop Carley Barjaktarovich collected a major award as she was named Defensive Player of the Year. Barjaktarovich boasts a .974 fielding percentage and made 39 putouts and 74 assists during the regular season. Junior outfielder Jaelynn Chesson and junior pitcher Gabriella Nori were named to the All-Patriot League first team. Barjaktarovich was named second team All-Patriot League along with junior second baseman Karsen O'Rourke.

While this abbreviated 2021 season has featured fewer games than normal, junior outfielder Jaelynn Chesson has managed to put together one of the finest offensive seasons in school history. In just 30 games, Chesson is batting .426 with 16 doubles, eight home runs and a whopping 50 runs batted in. She leads the Patriot League in doubles, home runs and RBIs and leads the nation in RBIs per game (1.67). Chesson ranks ninth nationally in doubles and ranks fourth in doubles per game (0.53). If you take out the two players who only played three games this season, Chesson ranks second in doubles per game. Chesson's 50 RBIs are six shy of the school single-season record set by Kim Miller in 1995. Miller set the record of 56 in 50 games. Chesson earned her second career first team All-Patriot League honor. Much of Chesson's production was impactful. In eight of Lehigh's 16 victories (and seven of its 14 league wins) Chesson delivered the game-tying or eventual game-winning RBI.

Led by juniors Jaelynn Chesson and Carley Barjaktarovich the Mountain Hawks have been powered by a formidable offensive attack that ranks second behind Boston University in most categories. Lehigh is batting .314 as a team and has scored 160 runs in 30 games. The Mountain Hawks lead the Patriot League and rank seventh nationally in doubles per game (1.83).

Lehigh and Colgate will meet in Thursday's second game set for 2:30 p.m. The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will meet in the postseason for the first time since 2013 when Lehigh prevailed 3-1 in the tournament's opening game. This year, Colgate claimed three of four games from Lehigh at Eaton Street Field in Hamilton, N.Y. The Raiders walked off in the bottom of the seventh in the series opener, while Lehigh scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to claim game three.

Colgate finished the regular season at 15-13-1 overall and 13-9-1 in the league. The Raiders went 1-1-1 at Bucknell on the final weekend of the regular season. Four Raiders: Morgan Farrah, Kara Fusco, Adrienne Nardone and Steph Jacoby, earned second team all-league laurels. Bailey Misken has been the Raiders' top pitcher at 6-6 with a 2.34 ERA in 89.2 innings of work.

Thursday's other first round game matches No. 1 Boston University and No. 4 Army West Point. The Terriers won the other four Patriot League major awards, led by three-time Pitcher of the Year Ali DuBois. BU posted a 33-2 regular season with a 21-1 league mark. The lone league loss came against Army, which enters the postseason at 16-15 overall and 12-10 in the league. DuBois anchors a pitching staff that leads the nation with a 1.07 team ERA. Boston University swept a doubleheader at Lehigh on March 27 with the final two games of the series rained out. Lehigh and Army split a four-game home-and-home series April 3-4.

The Patriot League tournament gets underway Thursday with the Boston University-Army West Point game at 12 p.m., with Lehigh and Colgate to square off at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Three games are slated for Friday with the winner's bracket game scheduled for 11 a.m. and elimination games scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. The championship round featuring game six and, if necessary, game seven is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
