Cimino's Heroics Lift Lehigh Past Colgate, Into Championship Round of PLT

5/14/2021 6:53:00 PM | Softball

BOSTON – With Lehigh down to its final out of the season, sophomore Emily Cimino drilled a two-run double to left center field, bringing the tying and go-ahead runs home as the Mountain Hawks rallied for a 4-3 victory over Colgate Friday in game five of the Patriot League Tournament at BU Softball Field.

Cimino had given Lehigh a 2-0 lead with an earlier double and home run before Colgate scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead. She drove in all four runs for the Mountain Hawks, who are back in the championship round of the tournament for the fourth straight time. Lehigh will need to defeat host and top seed Boston University twice on Saturday to win its first title since 2017. The Terriers defeated the Mountain Hawks 9-1 in five innings in Friday's first game and need just one win Saturday to claim their third straight tournament title.

Lehigh (18-15) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the elimination game as Cimino doubled home sophomore Josie Charles, who led off the inning by reaching on an error.

Cimino doubled Lehigh's lead in the top of the fifth as she hammered a 3-2 pitch from Bella Crow over the right field fence for her third home run of the season.

Colgate answered in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with one out before Virginia Irby cleared them with a double down the left field line, giving the Raiders a 3-2 lead after five.

The Mountain Hawks continued to trail by one into the top of the seventh. With one out, junior Addie Kittel drew a pinch hit walk. After a flyout, junior Carley Barjaktarovich singled to center to keep the game going and put the go-ahead run on base. Colgate went back to starting pitcher Bailey Misken but Cimino greeted her by lacing a 2-1 pitch into left center. Pinch runner Ansley Dambach scored the tying run and Barjaktarovich came all the way around from first to beat the throw for the go-ahead run.

Junior Gabriella Nori worked around a one out walk in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory. One day after shutting out the Raiders on two hits, she allowed three runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout to earn her ninth victory of the season. She was aided by a pair of double plays turned by the Mountain Hawks in the third and fourth innings.

Lehigh had seven hits against the Raiders. Cimino was 3-for-4, while Barjaktarovich was 2-for-3 to lead the way.

In Lehigh's first game Friday, Boston University scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third to take command of the winner's bracket contest. Nori was done in by three walks and three hits in the first inning as her string of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run ended at 36.

Lauren Nett was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Marina Sylvestri had a key pinch hit two run single in the first inning as Boston University improved to 35-2 on the season.

Lehigh scored its only run in the fourth inning as freshman Amanda Greaney led off with a double to right center and Charles singled home pinch runner Bella Egizio. Nett's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning ended the game via the eight run rule.

Barjaktarovich had a pair of bunt singles and drew a walk in three appearances against Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ali DuBois. The Mountain Hawks finished with four hits total in their first game of the day.

Saturday's championship round begins at noon from BU Softball Field. Lehigh will need two wins to claim the title while Boston University needs just one. All Patriot League Tournament action will once again be broadcast on ESPN+.
