Mountain Hawks Come Up Short Against Boston U. In Patriot League Championship
5/15/2021 3:59:00 PM | Softball
BOSTON – The Lehigh's run through the Patriot League Tournament came to an end Saturday with a 9-2 loss to Boston University in the championship round. Two Lehigh errors led to a five-run third inning and the Mountain Hawks were unable to recover from a 7-0 deficit. Lehigh was playing in the championship round for the fourth straight tournament but falls to the Terriers for the third straight time.
Junior Carley Barjaktarovich went 4-for-4 and sophomore Emily Cimino homered for the second straight game. They were named to the All-Tournament Team along with junior Gabriella Nori.
Lehigh's season ends at 18-16, while Boston University moves to 36-2 and wins its 18th straight game.
"BU is very good at forcing you into making mistakes and we certainly made enough mistakes," Troyan said. "We had four errors and allowed four walks. We can't afford to make those kinds of mistakes and expect to win. There was the obstruction call at the plate early in the game that could've made things a little different, but you have to play a very clean game to have a shot against a team like that. We didn't play the clean game we needed to.
Troyan continued, "It was nice to see Emily Cimino hit a home run and we knew were going to have to score some runs to have a chance, but with the mistakes we made we didn't really have a great chance."
Boston University was the visiting team on its home field Saturday and struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first as Lauren Keleher singled home Caitlin Coker with help from one of four Lehigh errors on the day. Keleher scored when Emily Gant reached on a fielder's choice to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead before Lehigh came to bat.
Nori retired the first two Terriers in the top of the third before a Gant double and Lauren Nett RBI single put BU up 3-0. Two errors on a ball hit by Nicole Amodio brought home another run and extended the inning to the point where BU scored three more unearned runs to take a 7-0 lead.
Lehigh scored its two runs in the fifth as Barjaktarovich reached on a one out bunt single, her third hit of the day, and Cimino followed by drilling a two-run home run to left center to cut the deficit to 7-2. The home run was her fourth of the season.
Boston University responded with two runs in the top of the sixth and worked out of trouble in the seventh when Lehigh put two runners on with nobody out.
Nett was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored for BU and was named tournament MVP. Keleher was the lone Terrier to record multiple hits against Lehigh pitching.
Lehigh finished with eight hits off Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ali DuBois. In addition to Barjaktarovich's four and Cimino's home run, junior Karsen O'Rourke had two and senior Payton Alsobrooks led off the seventh with a double.
Nori was charged with five runs (two earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings of work. She struck out one and did not walk a batter. Freshman Katelyn Young allowed four runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
"It all starts in the circle for us and Gabi did a great job," Troyan said. "She got a couple of wins for us against Colgate, which was huge. She got us to where we were. We felt like we needed to give her an opportunity to pitch in a championship setting today. She pitched great all weekend.
"Carley showed today offensively, why she deserved to be on the first team All-Patriot League." Troyan continued. "It was a coming out tournament for Emily Cimino, who had a tremendous weekend. She had all four RBIs yesterday and two RBIs today and really had a great tournament."
Lehigh will lose just two seniors to graduation in Alsobrooks and Allyson Dibsie.
"I'm very proud of the whole program, given the fact that we were working with a limited roster and working against COVID all season," Troyan said. "We did not start out very strong at all, but we turned it around. The team that ended the season certainly was a much better, much more polished version than what we were putting on the field earlier in the season. I don't know if we've had a team that has made bigger strides from February 1 until the middle of May than this particular team."
