Black named Pitcher of the Week for third time in 2021
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team hauled in two weekly awards, announced by the Patriot League on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore catcher Adam Retzbach received Player of the Week laurels for the first time and junior right-hander Mason Black was named Pitcher of the Week for the third time in 2021.
With his award, Retzbach becomes the fourth different Mountain Hawk to earn Player of the Week honors in 2021 and for the fifth time (Eric Cichocki won twice to open the season).
Retzbach hit .375 (6-for-16), slugged .688 and drove in six runs during the Mountain Hawks' 3-1 week against Fairleigh Dickinson and Navy. His two-RBI double in the fourth inning of the first game of Saturday's doubleheader proved to be the game-winning hit as Lehigh held on for the 2-0 victory. He went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in an 8-4 win over the Midshipmen in the second game Saturday. His first inning two-run double opened the scoring, tying the game on a sacrifice fly in the third inning and finished the day with an RBI triple in the eighth inning, securing the win.
Black was excellent on the mound in his 10th start of the season, picking up his first career complete game shutout, tossing seven strong innings. He allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out four batters. Black held the Midshipmen to a .174 batting average. In 57.2 innings this season, he is 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA and 80 strikeouts, 16 shy of breaking former major leaguer Craig Anderson '60's 61-year old program record of 94 strikeouts in a single season, set in 1960.
The Mountain Hawks finish out the regular season with a four-game series in Worcester – two games Saturday and two on Sunday – against Holy Cross for the first time this year. First pitch for both doubleheaders is set for noon.
