BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Jaelynn Chesson drove in five runs and Lehigh's pitchers continued their recent surge as the Mountain Hawks swept a Patriot League doubleheader from Holy Cross Sunday at Leadership Park.
After falling behind 2-1, Lehigh scored three runs in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh to back junior Gabriella Nori in a 7-2 game-one triumph. Freshman Katelyn Young then fired her second consecutive three hit shutout as Lehigh scored five runs over the final two innings to win 5-0.
Sunday's sweep moves the Mountain Hawks to 12-14 overall and 10-8 in Patriot League play, while Holy Cross is now 6-18 overall and 2-14 in the league.
Nori and Young combined to allow just two unearned runs on five hits over 14 innings Sunday, with one walk and 17 strikeouts. The duo has not allowed an earned run over the last 28 innings.
Lehigh was the visiting team for both games Sunday on its home field. Chesson staked the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one as she singled home Carley Barjaktarovich, who led off with a bunt single and stole second.
Holy Cross capitalized on a pair of early Lehigh errors in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on a squeeze bunt and a Bella Jankowski RBI single to take a 2-1 lead after one. Those runs would be the only runs scored by the Crusaders on the day.
Sophomore Emily Cimino drew a one-out walk in the third and Chesson pulled the Mountain Hawks even at 2-2 with a RBI double to right center. Two batters later, junior Karsen O'Rourke singled home Chesson to put Lehigh up 3-2 and freshman Amanda Greaney added a RBI single to give Lehigh a 4-2 advantage after two and a half innings.
Lehigh's lead grew to 6-2 in the top of the fifth as Chesson led off the inning with a home run to right center, her fifth of the year, and freshman Brooke Cannon followed with her first career home run out to left.
Junior Melissa Fedorka singled home O'Rourke for Lehigh's seventh run in the top of the seventh.
Nori improved to 6-5 on the season allowing two unearned runs on two hits over seven innings. She struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.
Chesson went 3-for-4 to lead the offense, which churned out 12 hits. Barjaktarovich, Greaney and junior Addie Kittel all had two hits in the opener.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Young and Holy Cross' Megan Yurchick. The game was scoreless through five innings with Holy Cross out-hitting Lehigh 3-1. Young faced just one batter over the minimum through five innings after starting a pair of 1-6-3 double plays in the first two innings and having Greaney throw out a runner stealing in the fourth.
Sophomore Josie Charles and Barjaktarovich opened the sixth with back-to-back singles. Cimino sacrificed the runners into scoring position before Chesson laced a double to left center bringing home the first two runs of game two. Chesson now has a Patriot League-leading 15 doubles and 39 RBIs on the season.
Lehigh added three more in the seventh when Cimino came up with two on and two out and lifted a fly ball down the left field line than hit off the fence. Two runs scored and Cimino raced all the way around for the inside the park home run to extend Lehigh's lead to 5-0.
Young allowed three singles over seven innings, striking out six and walking one to improve to 6-7 on the season. Barjaktarovich, O'Rourke and Charles each had two hits in the nightcap.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season next weekend with a four game, home-and-home series against rival Lafayette. Lehigh will travel to Easton for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon, before hosting the Leopards for two Sunday at noon at Leadership Park.
