EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team ran its winning streak to six straight and locked up a Patriot League Tournament berth in the process with a doubleheader sweep of rival Lafayette Saturday at Metzgar Fields.
Junior Jaelynn Chesson enjoyed a monster day, going 6-for-8 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. Sophomore Emily Cimino went 4-for-4 in game one, which Lehigh won 10-0 in six innings. Chesson drove in five of Lehigh's six runs in game two, a 6-2 Mountain Hawks victory.
Saturday's sweep evens Lehigh's season record at 14-14 as the Mountain Hawks move to 12-8 in Patriot League play. Lafayette falls to 1-19 overall and 1-15 in the league.
Cimino opened the game one scoring with her second home run of the season, on the first pitch she saw from Hannah Cook in the top of the first.
Lehigh added a second run in the fourth inning as junior Karsen O'Rourke led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by junior Addie Kittel.
Chesson's RBI barrage began with a two-run double in the fifth inning. She then scored when O'Rourke reached on an error to give Lehigh a 5-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks put game one out of reach with a five-run sixth inning. Senior Payton Alsobrooks and Cimino drove home runs with base hits and Chesson capped the frame with a three-run home run to left center.
