CAMDEN, N.J. – Powered by a fourth place finish from the Varsity Eight, the Lehigh rowing team finished sixth out of seven teams at the Patriot League Championships, Friday morning on the Cooper River. The Mountain Hawks' two Varsity Eight boats produced 26 points on the day.
Both Lehigh Varsity Eight boats finished second in their morning heats, competing against Navy and Colgate. The Varsity Eight's preliminary time of 7:05.398 was good for second in its heat and third best overall among the seven boats. In the grand final Lehigh posted a time of 6:46.256 to finish fourth, just under 12 seconds behind the winning boat from Navy.
"The Varsity Eight hit a bit of a rough patch in the heat where they got some of their pre-race jitters out," Lehigh head coach Brian Conley said. They came back ready to compete for the final. They charged down the course and it was just awesome to watch."
The Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:35.226 in the morning, finishing second in its heat and sixth overall. The Mountain Hawks' Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:46.881 in the grand final to finish sixth overall.
"There were ups and downs in both races," Conley said. "The Second Varsity Eight had a great heat, but between the inexperience we have in that boat and the difficult year we've had all around, they just weren't able to put it together for the final. The Varsity Eight had the opposite of a day. When your top boat performs, that says a lot about everybody else having pushed them to that level."
Conley gave credit to the leadership on his team for guiding the Mountain Hawks through this COVID-impacted year.
"There wasn't a lot of confidence that we'd make it to this event at the end of the year," he said. "The fact that we did says a lot about the people that opted in and put in the work. I'm really proud of the work that they did do and the finishes that they had. They really put something out there on the water today that they'll hold onto for the rest of their lives.
"Give a lot of credit to the leadership on our team. Without the leadership that we've had, we wouldn't have gotten the results we did today."
Lehigh finished two points behind fifth place Holy Cross and six behind fourth place Colgate. The Mountain Hawks did not enter a Varsity Four boat. Navy won its sixth straight Patriot League championship, scoring 54 points and winning he Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.
